Compass or Square?
TC at both companies will be 450k+ , the differences are minor (Square - 50K more at the first 4 year, excluding sign-in bonus and excluding refreshers) Compass base is higher than Squares. Square's 401k matching policy is better. Target refreshers at (max) Square are up to 35% of the original RSU grant At compass, the RSU grant is smaller, and the target refresher max can be around the original grant. At year 5, in order to maintain TC, I will need to get "meets" at Compass (level 4 out of 7). In Square, I will need to hit 70% mark of refreshers, not sure to what "expectation level" it is mapped. Sign-in bonus still to be negotiated at Square. At Compass, it's 125000. Square is 100% remote which I'm fine with that, premium market. Compass will be hybrid mode, also fine with that. Both roles are technical leaders, with scope in the team and sometimes cross teams, something like SDE3. TC for April 2022 at Amazon is 200K, as HV1 SDE2 YOE in Amazon - 3.5 YOE outside of Amazon - 10+, the reason I'm SDE2 is that most of my experience is not that high quality (small startups that got shut down too early). True, but at what resolution? one year? two years? Stocks should be looked at in the long run. I also like the fact you folks have ESPP, Compass doesnt. What I did not understand is what is the minimum target refresher at Square, and also how much % of base pay can I put on ESPP, and if there is a "lock price" for the stock that is guaranteed or it's just buying stocks with discount?
15% of salary, up to 25k a year. You lock into lowest price at start or end of period over a year with 6 months periods. 15% discount on that lowest price. Our gain right now for last 6 months on espp is like 50%+
Also, for all fellow Amazonians who are grinding LC - I liked my org at Amazon, but the promo is tough, and waiting two years for a comp update is insane. I managed to secure this round with no single LC hard being solved, and I don't understand dynamic programming :( If you are willing to "settle", and not go to FANG, the world outside of Amazon may be quite sweet.
I think in the long run Square is better due to their products being everywhere now. They are the 🐢 in the fintech race

Square is really overvalued IMO, at least in the short term. Try to look at market cap vs incumbents and account for different levels of company maturity. Maybe look at Amex, PayPal, visa for square and CBRE, JLL, colliers for compass. Compass just IPO’d and didn’t have a great earnings call last quarter. But square stock also dropped 30% in their first quarter being public. Sounds like you don’t have much of a stance beyond TC, but maybe think about the business models of each company and their potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
