Confused about my next career move

Jun 12, 2019 31 Comments

Hi, I currently have 4 offers from these companies below and I'm really confused which to take (All SDE roles)
1) Goldman Sachs, SF, TC: Around $190k
2) PayPal, SJC, TC: Around $180k
3) VMware, Palo Alto, TC: Around $200k
4) Doordash, SF, TC: Around $210k

Update: got another offer: machine learning engineer from is around $210k.

Now I think adobe would be my top choice for now.

I'm mostly considering between VMware and Doordash.
The pros of VMware are good benefits and actual money, good wlb, good location. Cons would be that the work might not be very exciting as it's something to do with development of apis for cloud systems, brand image.

The pros of doordash would be more ownership, good culture, good work, good potential upside to stocks. Cons would be location, not enough experienced engineers in the company, benefits not as good as VMware.

I want to optimize for work, TC, WLB and benefits.

I also have pending onsites with Google and Amazon. But I have deadlines for these current offers by coming Monday.

My current TC: $160k, 2yoe

Thanks! Appreciate all the inputs!

Come join DoorDash. The company is doing well and you'll learn a lot more at a startup. VMware will still be there when you look for your next job. DM me for more details.

Without knowing more about the teams, at this point in your career here’s my ranking for SDE roles:
    1 - DoorDash
    2 - VMware
    3 - PayPal
    500 - Goldman Sachs

Nice. I guess the only reason I wouldn’t do DoorDash is because I don’t know how sustainable the business is. But you seem like you’re young enough into your career it’s a risk worth taking. VMware, to me, doesn’t have as much room for growth and the technology has been around a while. To me, “enterprise” usually equates to legacy.

  • I wouldn't do Doordash unless that TC is atleast 25% greater than the solid cash ones.

Don't buy into the hype of DDs revenue exploding; once the VC money dries up it will come crashing down.

Edit: I had to edit looking at some of the comments. I had an offer from them few years ago when they were close to a unicorn; Nothing explains the 13B valuation to me. They have been gaining share by pumping lot of coupons over the last 6-8 months. I feel bad for the poor souls who have joined over the last 1yr, the valuation increased from 1B to 7B and stands at 13B now. Since the OP posted TC which is the rule of the sub just realize that stock can go bust so go for the learning and also btw the engineers dint standout then and hearing the same from a few friends who did recent interviews with them.

I would go with VMware, do something fun on the side. And who knows you may love it. Ticks all the boxes so the only risk is boredom. I’d say that’s pretty damn good

DoorDash is paper money, effectively valued at $0. Are you telling me without stock they still are paying you $210k?

Pretty sure most people on this board would say stay away from VMWare. If you like Doordash then go for that.

How much time are you taking off work to get 5 offers? Do you schedule your onsites on the same days so you're only taking off a few days or something?
