I'm leaving my current job for a new one and they're probably going to want me to consult for a few hours at a time in the future. What hourly rate should I give when asked? The catch is I'm moving from Alabama making $78k to FB Seattle making ~230k TC. A lot of local contractors are available for $50-55/hr but I'd have to ask for double that just to match my new pay not including employer overhead / benefits. Yes I already considered asking for about tree fiddy, thanks for the suggestion. Bit under 3 yrs work exp, US bachelor's only, thanks for asking.
135-150% ... of your hourly salary. That’s the minimum. Don’t forget you pay 15% self employment tax. Remaining 15-35% is because you don’t get paid a PTO hour or insurance or any other benefit for every hour you work for them now. You won’t be able to maintain “good relationship” for too long without asking for this much. And because there’s a reason for it... note that use of the word “minimum”.

Ask for a little more than double that. Your hourly rate at consulting be close to that of your tc. I understand that consulting gives you flexibility and at a full time job you sometimes work more than 40 hrs per week but don’t sell yourself short.
I'd mostly be doing this as a service to my old company, probably max 10hrs / month. Still have good relationships there. So on one hand, it's not about the money, but on the other I expect to be fairly compensated and don't want to be low enough that they'd ask me for help often.
