Was offered a contractor role at Chevron. And my manager told me he will convert me into FTE within a year. Since currently FTE possitions are not available. Is that a good choice? Contractor role offers 30% pay bump to what i currently make. But i never was a contractor, so not sure how is the life as one.
Pay bump needs to be 50%-100% minimum to cover for health care, taxes and social security. What will likely happen is you will have a bigger paycjeck until you file your taxes and find out you owe 20k-50k in April.
Is being a contractor that bad? btw if i get a contractor role at Google, can i put google on my resume?
You can’t put google on your resume. We explicitly say you cannot as a contractor. If you are a w2 contractor it isn’t quite as bad, they take taxes from your check at least No employer match on unemployment, etc. so it will be higher than FTE. Also you won’t get invited to any company functions. Can’t use internally licensed tools without manager approval don’t get perks like health care, or learning paths available to fte. Being a contractor is ok if you treat it like a business. But poor return for your time vs being an entrepreneur.
Every contractor gets that promise. Market is hot, Keep looking
why they promise such things , if they cant deliver?
Cuz chumps believe them
