I've seen a lot of people comment that moving to Canada isn't worth it due to the lower pay and higher taxes. I wanted to set the records straight and show you some cost of living comparisons between the two. https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Canada&country2=United+States&city1=Toronto&city2=San+Francisco%2C+CA&tracking=getDispatchComparison The biggest saving would be housing where housing is 1/2 as expensive as SF. For most people its about 30% cheaper which means you can equate salaries as 1CAD = 1USD. If you are working at FAANG, this should mean you are pretty much earning equivalent pay. #Canada #Toronto #CostOfLiving #SanFrancisco #softwareengineer #bayarea #housing
Let me put it another way, if you are willing to scale your life down and live frugally you can earn an assload more money in the bay. Averages don't mean shit, you have to look at your own lifestyle. A good reason to move to Toronto is that it is an awesome city and the people are friendly and welcoming, low crime, great schools and a world class city. The bay has high crime, protests/riots, fires, earthquakes. You will lose the money argument every time.
Oh 100% agree with that point. If you are fine with living frugally you will definitely earn a lot more in the Bay Area. However, if you want to live a fuller lifestyle, then even money wise, its not as bad as people claim. I see statements everywhere saying, that convert plainly without factoring in cost of living. You seem to understand that so this isn't necessarily directed to you.
I hear ya, and I'm also planning on moving back to Toronto once I've made enough here. Thanks for fighting the fight.
