Working with a legacy code base, some of the old timers that knows it like the back of their hand are always busy. Struggled for most of the sprint trying to gather how to complete task, near sprint end I finally got the idea of how to move forward. Task carries over into new sprint yet to be implemented. I make some implementation, stop for approval, was told I’m doing it wrong by copying and pasting (was suggested by a teammate to do this). A lead told me, I need to write it from scratch. So I reverse engineer the legacy code, wrote it from scratch, made it more efficient, but needed help understanding how to abstract the legacy queries, since I’m not familiar with what I’m working with. The data was the 1% I needed to drive my implementation home. I get a meeting with someone who knows the stuff, with hopes that they can assist me in writing new, efficient queries… they tell me, copy it from the code base. Only, I expressed I did that already and it took me two days to copy and refactor the thousands of lines of code and dozens of files into our new micro service. I start getting subtle threats that the story must be completed this week because eyes are on me. It triggers my anxiety and I let them know, I made no progress that day because I was having a mental breakdown. The task gets pulled from me. The other person spent most of the time still asking me for help in completing it even though I was deemed incompetent haha. And I get a message from my team lead saying that they can’t depend on me. It’s my first two months in this company, with no proper onboarding, and all the expectation to perform like people who’ve been at the company for years. Will name drop company in dm only. No TC for this post for identity reasons, but in short, not getting paid enough for this crap. Edit: See comments

Just play dead and LC. This job doesn’t deserve you
This! Glad to make the number of likes to 100. The possum way.
Start leetcoding my friend. They don’t deserve you.
That sounds horrible, hopefully you get better or find a better team.
Sounds like a very shit team . Find a new team or company
This is a company wide issue as far as I can see :(
Which comp?
Name drop company so we can boycott
F for f* Freddie Mac
OP said it was UnitedHealth Group
That’s a tough situation. You can try and LC your way into team/company but the irony is you’re not working on any of the skills needed for the real job like dealing with legacy code.
It is disappointing how little (read: none) of my *advanced* degree I get to use in my job. The skills I need are almost all specific to my particular small team and our homegrown applications. I could have done this job straight out of high school and been just as prepared.
@raytheon yay. I feel like this is an open secret rarely discussed. All the interesting work at places like Google, FB were done a decade ago. All the interesting work nowadays is consolidated to a few teams and 95% of ICs are just doing basic crud shit with complicated tools.
Jesus christ. In your next interview, you should ask questions to get a feel for team dynamics (friendly? do events together? help each other out to get the job done? etc) and choose a team that works on modern stuff
This job has taught me a lot more about what I don’t want in my next role. Certainly.
Yeah this is why interview process is a two way street. For me, the team matter a lot more than TC since no amount of TC is worth the mental stress.
It depends.
But realistically wtf are you going to ask in the 5 minutes left at the end after the interview exercise to get a sense of this. Might as well optimize for TC
Get out after 1 year.
I don’t think I can last that long haha
That is what she said
Fuck them. Prepare for interviews and find a better job
I did the same. But in my case my team is great. Dependent team is full of ego
