Cried during Amazon Intern Evaluation Looking For New Grad Job

Pretty much what the title says. From June - September I did an internship with Amazon, more specifically, AWS. In the days and weeks prior to the intern evaluation I was told “I have a pretty good chance of getting a return offer”, that I “have really demonstrated that I can perform at a high level”, etc. from my mentor. My mentor is a great guy I really appreciated the kind words. He said inclined to hire. My manager said not inclined. It is frustrating because my manager was relatively not as updated with the project as much as my mentor was, and furthermore, this manager joined AWS this year. I found working with him frustrating, as he seemed to want to always be right or something and in addition, he wasn’t very technical with AWS services or at least he didn’t seem as technical as the other two managers in our organization. I felt at times I was my own manager, the L7 on our team and I reminded him to book a one on one meeting with me like my first or second week. I got myself access to add tickets to a sprint when imo a manager should take care of that, I asked him about the midterm review. Like tasks that I think a manager should take care of. He didn’t even go to the office for my demo. When the intern evaluation meeting happened and he let me know that he was not inclined I literally got emotional. My mentor said that some if not majority of the feedback my manager he gave was stuff that is common among L4 engineers or new grad engineers and those things come w experience. My mentor said I was coachable, and that those feedbacks are coachable. I worked so hard man. I think that’s probably why I was so emotional. I literally got assessments from JP Morgan Chase, and Akuna Capital. Airwallex and Ripple also got back to me after applying to them, however I didn’t really focus on doing the assessments and/or interviews for these companies because I wanted to focus on my Amazon internship project. Now there is about 4 months to try and get a new grad job. Given the current state of the economy, and that I have about 4 months till I graduate university, I am a little stressed about getting a new grad job. If anyone can kindly refer me to their company, that would be much appreciated. At this point, I am trying to get a job so I am not super picky. Any help would be appreciated. What an ass. Cant you be a bit emphatic even though i know ur employer has managed to scraped that out of your head

Amazon dHRa63 Sep 10, 2022

Haha. Leetcode is the best advice you can give these days to anyone working in software industry. Whining won’t save you. Will just get pipped quicker. It’s the cold truth, I don’t make these rules…

When I was bidding goodbye to my team on the last day of my pip, one coworker grinned at me and said "have a good weekend". The others around him laughed and I felt so ashamed. I am not going back to that hell hole. Better be happy that you're let go so soon. Plenty of good places in this world

TD cdn_swe Sep 10, 2022

Whatt why would coworkers laugh at someone on their last day let alone last day of pip, sounds like a toxic environment. It’s good that you’re out of that environment now

TD cdn_swe Sep 10, 2022

Yea fs fs, I’m looking forward to new opportunities and/or other companies

Keep your head up pal. I’m sure you’ll land something. 🫡

Damn, dude. I'm sorry. I'll never even consider working at Amazon, ever.

TD cdn_swe Sep 10, 2022

There was another intern in our organization who cried like 3-4 times apparently, I think my manager signed off on that interns project as well

TD cdn_swe Sep 10, 2022

It’s one thing to hear ab stereotypes ab managers at Amazon, to actually see something I felt was close to the stereotypes thought wasn’t what I expected though

I only knew there was such a thing as no intern return offer after joining a startup

HashiCorp save🇺🇸! Sep 10, 2022

You should be glad that you dodged a bullet because if you joined you will be PIPed. 4 months is a lot of time for interviews.

General Motors aShv34 Sep 10, 2022

Why would that be any worse ? Op gets paid during that time and will have a job right out of school. That’s the hardest time to get a job. Not to mention Amzn offers are extremely cash heavy in the first 2 years — so zero risk

Amazon andypippy Sep 10, 2022

You dodged a bullet. Imagine getting the offer and working for a POS manager like that. Things may seem depressing now but focus hard on your interview prep for the next 4 months. I am sure you will get a great offer. Good luck!

Lucky team to get a hard working candidate who does all the work like you. Senior engineer just used you to get all work done with a disagreeing manager who has a skill set of being dramatic. Every company generally has a Senior Engineer + Manager combo, good cop bad cop.

Relax man. I got rescinded from coinbase 2 weeks before my start date in June. The same week as graduation. I had two offers in hand before end of month. Just apply with that Amazon internship on you're resume.
