What’s the deets on Cruise? I know they were going through a bit of a tough time from a morale standpoint late last year. How is it now? Does it feel stable eg. layoffs/reorgs minimal? People happy?
No layoffs in sight - we are hiring everyone we can get (and who can clear the bar).
Do you think that’s a good thing? Hiring more doesn’t necessarily mean better progress. Or is Cruise growing at the appropriate rate?
Currently in my org we have punted on a lot of work because we don’t have the manpower. Some leadership threw some pretty wildly optimistic hiring targets last year but once we implemented proper hiring we actually slowed down dramatically. Ultimately i think it’s a good thing but we’ll see.
In my experience there was no company moral problem last year, there were just a few disgruntled (possibly former) employees ranting on blind. In general cruise is a great place to work, hard problems to solve and a meaningful impact to society. As a growing startup some teams have better management than others (but some are fantastic), so just make sure you get a chance to talk to your direct manager, and if you're still unsure then ask to have a call with their manager too. On average though most managers at Cruise are great.
Really depends what team. Some teams are really awful to work for with terrible management. Some teams are great and led by visionaries. Just need to get a sense of which one you're gonna join.
What are some examples of the terrible ones?
