How’s capitalism going?
As a Senior Data Engineer with Amazon for the past 14 years, I am curious about what other companies typically expect from this role. If I were to prepare for a Senior position at another company, what specific areas should I focus on?|
In order: SQL, python (or other general purpose programming language), An etl tool, data modeling, Tableau (or other viz tool) Everything else you listed I feel is company specific. And even the essentials companies will prefer the same tool but also evaluate competitor tools in the same category strongly. So just pick whatever has the most market share.
What would be an example of an ETL tool?
Aws glue, Azure Data factory, old school ssis.
All of the above. Depending on company and interviewer. Most of the higher paying ones want you to be able to solve leetcode easy/medium. Talk about data pipelines and infra including frameworks and software like Kafka, spark, and Hadoop. Be able to talk about and do modeling based on case scenario. Write sql efficiently. Bonus points for domain specific background and/or cloud specific saas exposure and experience.
14 years of experience at Amazon why aren't you in management or looking to go into management for another company?
When I got interviewed, they always asked SQL questions, Spark, and data modeling. Tools may vary, but SQL is always there.
What about DSA?
DSA too.
Smart move! IMO, tenured amazons are in for a ride awakening. Interviews are hard, especially now!
All of the above.
Why can't multiple items be selected. You may not survive if you think you can get away by learning just one of the above!
Hey! I need referral for apple. Can you help!?
