Advice, please: I'm in a fortunate position: Currently working as a Data Scientist, Analytics at a series C. I build ETL, lots of exec insights and PM work (I run team planning, sprints, etc.), some predictive modeling, very little ML. I've performed well since joining ~8 months ago and am now managing 2 Analysts and leading DS infra + analytics strategy for a large part the business. I am tasked now with choosing a new title for myself that better reflects my role and interests as the org grows. My thoughts: Sr. DS - paves the way for a more technical path (a bit less interesting to me) Manager, DS & Analytics - probably most accurate now, but I worry about stagnating without more technical chops Sr TPM, Data - captures the PM side of the job, as well as some of the technical work I've been doing as an IC. Thoughts? TC 200 YOE 5 #data #dataanalytics #datascience
Drop the analytics, just use Data Science Manager. For titles you always want something as prestigious and broad as possible. You never know what aspects you'll want to emphasize in the future and keeping the title generic helps with that. You could spin DS manager into any of these roles, but spinning a senior IC or TPM role into a DS manager role? Not as easy...
Yeah second this Manager title and explicitly DS makes the best combo for your career path
Awesome, thanks both!
Either manager or Tpm depending on what you want your next job to be. Although title may not help much with only 5 yoe if you want to be a manager at a well paying big tech company that pays 350-400+
Pushing for that $400 in the next 2 years :)
5 years experience as DS?
Good point - no, 5 in analytics (first as a PM, now DS)
Making the jump to M track is the single biggest obstacle to overcome if you're interested in that kind of career, take the opportunity if it's given here.
Noted - I like management and it comes more naturally. Thanks!
