How do you guys do your daily stand ups? In-person or over slack of email? I like the in person stand ups because of the human element. What worked well at your companies?
Slack
The topic is about daily stand ups. Weekly 15min is a whole different story and I don't think there is much to talk about.
Fuck stand up. Waste of time process that rarely adds value. Only needed to hold accountable low performers.
Kinda helps with accountability for high performers too imho. Maybe you feel this way coz you’re a high performer? If it stopped dyou think it’s possible your work product could atrophy to that of a mid performer?
No. I've been promoted twice and skip stand up 99% of the time. When you do most of the teams work and code reviews your manager cuts you slack and lets you be free for the most part.
Slack thread
The only correct way to do daily standups is not to do daily standups.
This
Mondays and Wednesdays only. Seems to be most useful for the manager to get up to speed what the team is working on. Otherwise we speak to each other anytime when needed.
Quick 5-10 minute check in over conference call. Used to do it over chat at a set time (I preferred this. Not interrupted and written record) Stand-up is Helpful in short and sweet format. Helps me know what issues are on team broadly as IC and what I need to look out for in CRs
Either in person or via video conference is the best. Let's the team know of any issues and let's managers know if they need to adjust course on anything being delivered in the Sprint. Allows for full work delivery transparency between the whole team and stakeholders to rapidly adjust if/when roadblocks occur.

This form of micromanagement doesn’t work well at all. Used by naive managers who think they’re doing the management that way. In my previous company, we are asked to standup and announce what we did the previous day and what we plan to do today. What a useless way to waste time. I would say to use the time to see who needs help rather than micromanaging day to day activities
Stand ups are intended to reduce the need to ask someone directly for status updates and causing unnecessary context switching. Stand ups are a way to prevent micromanagement.
Yesterday/today should be brief, it’s not micro management.standups are the opportunity to discuss if you need help or ran into issues. They are meant for the dev team, not mgmt..
