Hi everyone, I came across a couple of DS positions in London. I’ve been working for 3-4 years at Delivery Hero in Berlin and currently looking for a different industry. I appreciate to know personal experiences as Data Scientists at Expedia in London. WLB, pros and cons, etc. Happy to connect. Thanks in advance! #Expedia #expediagroup
I was based out of their London office a few years ago and have kept in touch with some ppl. WLB was good, perhaps too good and was certainly a factor for pre-covid layoffs. Practically half the London office is ex-consultants that wanted to start a family. Pay is generally low when benchmarked across competitors. Atm they're running a 50/50 hybrid working model. So do expect to check in the office 2-3 times a week. The open plan office is a disaster if you're an IC. Work highly depends on team and line manager. Matt Fryer's org has some interesting projects and he's rather supportive but there are a lot of coasters and middle managers that are no where near qualified to do the job that will simply shut down ideas so that you can keep grinding at the same old stuff they've been doing for ages... Personally I'd steer clear, I left as soon as I had a better opportunity without looking back for a sec. But if wlb is top of your priority list this might just be your coasting paradise.
Hey I'm a Data Scientist II at Expedia Group, feel free to message me for more specific questions or a referral. WLB is pretty good at my level, although sometimes you might have later meetings due to HQ being in Seattle. Official policy is WFH 1/2 the time, although I only do 2 days a week in the office and no one cares. I don't have an issue with the open office plan, we all have assigned regions to sit in so you know you'll be near your team and people are good at using the soundproof booths or meeting rooms to do calls so it isn't too noisy. ● Pros: most people you work with are really friendly, fairly regular office events with catering and free drinks, seem to be steering clear of large layoffs 🤞🤞, Angel is a pretty convenient location with lots of restaurants/shops and right by Kings Cross, nice showers with fresh towels provided (good for cycling in or going to gym at lunch) ● Cons: No regular lunch provided - only breakfast cereal until 10:30am, sometimes it can be a bit 'too chill' and it can be hard to get responses/what you need from people, currently in the middle of migration between data sources, company has been pretty reorg-happy in the past few years, chairman very anti-WFH but idk how much influence he has over that being changed
I don't know for sure, but I do know we do it for tech graduate roles, and that we're pretty understaffed for DS roles so it seems likely
Thanks a lot for your response. Sent you a DM! 🙌🏻

Does the market believe in Sundar Pichai?
Never worked at Expedia but worked in the same industry for a while and interviewed many people from Expedia. The impression I got is that it’s pretty boring and stale. WLB is good but progression is slow.
