I’m considering a (non-senior) data scientist offer at a FAANG company. I can get a senior title and a bit better comp elsewhere at this point. How much is working at a FAANG company worth in terms of long-term career and earnings prospects? I’ve got a PhD, several years of postdoc, and 3 yoe in industry.
I would actually go with the comp.
Thanks. What about opportunities to learn? I’m concerned that being one of the most senior in a smaller company will limit my technical development. Do you think being in Amazon helped you develop more/faster?
I think there are lots of opportunities to learn here. It may be true that a smaller company may limit your development, but on the flip side, you get a larger scope and heavier responsibilities from the get-go.
Tbh any good company including fang has similar brand. I'd care more about learning opp and impact you can make to get the most out of the role
Within data science it matters a lot which company and role you're doing. More info is necessary to really judge the prestige

I am starting to think Chinese interviewers currently fail non-Chinese candidates on purpose.
Having FAANG on the resume allows you to go knock on the door of a company you’re interested in working at and they will give you a shot. All the rest is still up to you. I think it’s a huge door opener for getting past the resume review process
It’s a door opener however most selective employers in the Bay Area understand the difference between data scientist - analytics vs data scientist engineering at FB.
