This seems to be an interesting move considering that Serbia is not a member of the European Union thus this new office won't attract talent from the regional countries that are EU members. Any insights on this? Why did Databricks choose this location? I heard that there are about 10k Russian developers in Belgrade now because of the Russia-Ukraine war (might be an overexaggeration), was that the driving force behind this decision? Competitors like Cloudera and Snowflake have offices in Budapest and Warsaw, relatively close but in the European Union. Why didn't choose one of those? https://www.databricks.com/blog/announcing-databricks-belgrade-development-center
Lot of expert SQL Server developer goons over in Serbia. Probably trying to poach database developers.
Before the war, there were plenty of companies relying on Russia contractors. In order to keep using them, some companies offered relo to places like Serbia, Georgia, the -stans, etc. It could be something like that. Basically, they possibly reconstituted a subset of former Russian employees and contractors in Serbia.
Lots of database developers in Serbia. A lot (relatively) of Microsoft’s database dev is done there
Is there a historical reason that’s led to there being a lot of db devs in Serbia?
Cost of doing business for a fraction of what it’d be in the US. Also labor cost is incredibly low in East Europe. Look at the all the companies hiring in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Serbia, Prague, Estonia etc. Heck even Ireland is dirt cheap to hire people. If you earn more than £70k in Ireland you’re probably in the top 1% lol
Re Ireland: Thats so bizarre considering the extreme cost of housing (in Dublin) and high taxation. Modern Feudalism.
In a lot of countries salaries haven’t really caught up with the rising cost of housing(living). Just look at Canada. It’s going to be the leader in the next economic meltdown - low wages and high cost of living. High taxes too!
A lot of very talented software engineers in Serbia. It seems to be a national sport.
serbians are smart af (see: nikola tesla)
Serbian office not attracting talent from regional talent is simply incorrect. First of all, Databricks won't hire hundreds of employees immediately and they'll hire only locally. But when they do decide to take people from abroad, they will have opportunities as salaries at Databricks in Serbia are higher than in Romania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia etc. E.g. new grads and juniors get 3k-4k NET a month (only from the base salary), plus sign-on bonus, RSUs etc.
