I'm declining a high L5 offer ( met L6 bar but did not raise it, and potential promo to L6 within a year based on feedback) due to being lower than my current comp, the requested # is within L6 range. The Sr managers all agreed on exception but finance team rejected the request due to the budget. Would this situation be any interesting to other teams like Alexa and AWS for a potential better offer? PM me.... ******************************* Update: Declined their offer. Thanks everyone for your comments. ******************************
You got an L5 offer. You didn't raise the bar for L6. You'll get L5 comp.
This. A manager or recruiter sold you on ego. None of those details except you were offered L5 will fly. You will get the same offer on any team. It is not the purview of hiring manager to modify - to prevent just such an occurrence as the one you're trying to engineer.
I'm not at amazon so I don't know, but at intel it's perfectly possible that your skills would make you an L5 in one role and an L6 in another. Although if you get an L5 offer first that's probably the team you're most suited for so it's unlikely.
in this situation I think it's better to prep, etc and interview again to get a solid L6. even with an exception to get the comp you want, and even if you get promoted quickly, the comp system sets your trajectory based on that initial L5 offer. eg promo will put you at bottom of the L6 band, ramp in L6 depends on time in role, etc. if comp is important to you and you are close to L6, you are probably better off in the long term by waiting (I know this is stupid but that's unfortunately how it is).
also, currently, from Amazons point of view (your interview performance), you are overpaid at oracle. it's reasonable to give you comp appropriate to your interview performance.
C867A2 - your argument is BS. Classic lowball tactic. OP walk away if its less than your current comp. Its not an honor to work for Bezos and be money poor.
You wouldn't get L6 promo within a year. I don't know why recruiters and managers make that ridiculous promise. You need to build a lot of trust and respect from other L6 engineers, and have delivered a bunch of L6 level work. Would be easier to just reinterview in a while.
Totally agree. Any promotion promise and not real paper, are just words. They mean nothing onc you are in.
Completely agree. These recruiter/ manager promotion promises within one year of joining are notoriously rampant in amazon
a lot of engineers I know got gip into Amazon at a lower than their former salary and title, only to found out that the promised work and growth potential is laughable. if I were op I will leave, especially if you get a higher offer from Oracle or MS.
L6 in a year is not easy at Amazon. Promotion process is painstaking even after some recent improvements. Unless you get it in writing don't trust anyone. If you are not happy with your offer look elsewhere.
Doesn't make sense how you got approval for exception but finance blocked it. They have an L6 req. anyway, finance also aggregates SDE cost to a single cost for all SDEs. They don't budget separately Sounds like they didn't want to pay you OR it was shot down by the VP
HRBP?
Seems unlikely Mostly likely the ask was too far out of band
Find it hard to believe.. amazon is offering good offers if you do well. My offer was in mid point of e6 at fb only to a point where you do not care much about few 10k here and there so dont believe amazon will disappoint if they need you badly
Dont believe the fast promo to L6. It depends on MANY factors, some out of your control.
Hm can request an exception if they really need you. Depends on the org.

isn't Oracle notorious for paying crazy amounts to build their cloud team? plus, Amazon's l5 comp is shit compared to what you'd get at the other big tech companies with equivalent experience.
I turned down my Amazon offer a year and a half ago as a new hire for my Oracle offer because of the pay difference. Was a big enough difference to overcome Oracle's reputation
