Deloitte

My wife is currently negotiating with Deloitte. She was told the position could have 50 Percent travel which she is not keen on. Most companies post Covid are reducing travel Drastically. Traveling is fine as long it’s few days a Month. Any pointers on how does it work in Deloitte internally. Can she get local assignments. Should she be talking to about it at offer stage ?

it depends. If she is lucky, she may find a large client with a multi year contract with deloitte that she can stick to. If not she may have to travel almost every week 3 to 4 days. It's not fun unless that's the thing you like to do. Burns you out pretty fast.

I was planning to tel the recruiter before hand. Do you no is if they will be able to find out the project etc ?

D2L robin80 Aug 14, 2021

Not until she joins. And the recruiter will not be able to say for sure if she will find a project in the same city.

Don't take a job of this nature if you are not ok with travel. You have little to no control over how much you'll need to do it, and neither does the company. If the customer wants you on site you will be on site

^this is accurate. Consulting is a client-centric role.

Deloitte does a ton of internal projects, which I found were pretty easy to get staffed on. Just navigate well and network with partners/managers that lead those kinds of projects

Would need to check its feasibility before I join. Do you know if we could get those details before hand ?

Don’t do it. Especially if you don’t like travel.

Yeah, this is not the role if you only want a few days of travel per month. More likely it will be you are at home only a few weekdays per month.

No one I heard of is able to negotiate what projects they’ll be on with the recruiter. Once you join, it will then be her job to get staffed on projects. If she does a good job of networking internally, she’ll have more options when it comes to projects. But when push comes to shove, if she gets staffed on a project that requires travel, she will unfortunately need to do it. It is part of the job. Yes there are internal projects, but generally firms want to limit the number you do because they do not result in billable hours. If someone doesn’t do enough client gigs, it may hurt them at performance review.

50% means 90% likelihood of 100% travel. I know a consulting firm with lots of local long term DFW work that is hiring (I worked there). DM me if interested.

50% or more equates to 4 days a week (M-TH). There is no way to find out what kind of projects she will be staffed on. Once you are onboarded it’s your responsibility to find a project as well, the longer you are on bench, higher the risk of getting let go. Resource managers aren’t oh great help all the time in finding a project (atleast in cases I have know and seen) You cannot be alway staffed on internal projects due since they may not fall under the bailable category, which will have a direct impact on your performance review. Your snapshots and billable are everything at Deloitte. Beside these, you have to network network network as they say with seniors managers, partners and principals, even if you don’t like it. People who are in their good books move forward quickly despite lacking real skills. I have seen Senior consultants and managers with poor to zero soft skills, tech skills but still getting promoted to next level because they are know the biggies. I think Deloitte standard has gone down drastically over the years, they hire everyone these days not the creamy layer anymore. Ps. - am not with Deloitte anymore :)

Most proposals going out are virtual only, 50% est is actually on the high side. Depending on your level and projects.

These consultancies do have non travel roles, but those are well established to be working from the office of Deloitte or whoever. If you’re in a client office role, they will regard long local commutes as non travel. So they’re saying they have no idea where she will work, but it will be at the client site. 50/50 to be local market or travel is what they’re saying.
