I’m a veteran who receives disability from the VA for an injury that occurred on duty, I usually answer “yes” to the veteran status question on many job applications. I rarely get any call backs from my applications. Do you think that maybe companies see me as a liability because I answered yes? I’ve answered no, as well and still get no responses. But I can’t help but wonder. Any HR person that can add input?
Vet here. They don’t really like vets in tech. That’s been my experience. Make sure you find places that do. Don’t answer any questions on an application, that you are not required to. They haven’t met you, there’s no need to ask those questions before they do. If you can select, “rather not answer,” do that instead. Applications are for outsiders. Try to get an in house referral from someone with influence. Being a vet, in tech, isn’t relevant, and therefore not necessary to divulge. I know a lot of you will disagree but I have 21 years of tech experience and I’m telling you, it doesn’t matter. Focus on the skills you have now and take that approach when discussing your background. If it comes up after you are hired, so be it. Discrimination is rampant. Any little thing a screener is looking for any reason to ignore you. Remember, online applications are not they best way to land a job. Land a job through trusted professionals in your network.
Try to get a referral. It's also good for the referring person, cause referral bonus
Some stats say 95% hiring were from referral. You can ask people here to help if you don't have direct connections.
That is definitely not true for Amazon. We have like 1%through referral. I think recruiters are not incentivised to process referrals as much as external hires, so referred resumes just go to /dev/null.
They don’t make a hiring decision based on those answers, nor should they. They just like to get the free credit when they coincidentally hire someone who is a veteran.

I don’t think that matters, if anything it’d be an incentive. You’re not getting calls back because recruiters are lazy and barely look at resumes. I’m starting at Amazon next week, I submitted 23 applications before I was finally contacted for a position.
It’s so frustrating! I cater my resume to “hit the keywords “ for that dumb computer filter of each posting, and still get nothing. I left one of the big 3 auto industries a year ago kind of in a bad way, I feel like they blacklisted me!
I know the feeling. I quit a job in 2016 because of a boss I hated. It took me 10 months before I got into MSFT. The search absolutely sucks. I thought there was something against me. But there really wasn’t. In my state, an employer legally can’t say much to other companies besides your employment dates. Just make the search easy for a recruiter. Make your resume super easy to read. Limit how much text, and figure out the simplest way to explain your experience without forcing them to read. They should be able to look at your resume from a few feet away and be able to get a general idea of what you’re all about. Good luck. It’s an awful grind.
