Hi, Has anyone gone through the hiring process for a Developer Advocate position at Google? How does the process change from a standard SWE role? TC: 100k CHF Thanks! #developeradvocate #google
What’s a developer advocate?
A lawyer that gets programmers out of jail. Badum tss!
Google coined the name to distinguish the role from developer evangelism, a marketing function. Developer advocates are developers who engage with a specific developer community AND advocate for them internally to ensure product features are built and evolve to meet their needs. Similar to a lawyer, it means the DA represents the customer and is expected to help influence priorities and even push back internally when perceiving that developer needs aren’t being met. Having worked as engineers, DAs are expected to be able to understand developer issues and speak to other developers on their level to help them succeed building their solutions using the technology the DA works with — and because trust is so important, even to be candid if the technology isn’t the right fit.

Women, help me understand why this is inspirational
How do you get developer advocate interviews? I am a Sr. Swe and I have never gotten selected. Do you need a marketing background?
I don’t think so. I guess is more a matter of dev community exposure such as participation to conferences and writing blogposts.
Ah. That makes sense.
