Varies by country, not EU-wide. Germany and France took the longest, people there were just laid off in August from the round that hit US in January.
I can tell u with Intel that in Ireland..1) very few groups were offered voluntary packages 2) no involuntary separation 3) attempted to put in place a 3 to 6 month time off program without success. It seemed liked packages were based on YOE, about 2 weeks per YOservice. To put it broadly ya they left EU off the cull list..
Does anyone have data from the UK?
Redundancies happened in the UK. Labour laws not that great here (but also at least it's not like US where you just get cut immediately) Followed the law at least, unlike Twitter, sorry, X https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/consultation Source - me
So how do you get cut? Do you get handed over a long enough notice to find another job? Especially in terms of immigration, is the process worth worrying about?
They get laid off but mandatory 6+ months severance. But you pay for that because TC is peanuts there
I think only France was not executed in Microsoft, all others yes. Germany took a while, but Microsoft managed to lay off a lot of people there. It's not that hard to do layoffs in EU, it just takes longer.
No, 200 out of 2000. But it takes time and people are offered good severance packages. Volunteers first, MSFT doesn't get to choose
Unless you are industry wide exceptional talent, these companies won't hire from those countries. Even if they hire, they will want to relocate to US or UK.
UK is not cheap either. Their labor laws are as bad as EU
Yes for MSFT. Laws are strong meaning it takes way more time as they have to go through a special process (eg call for volunteers first, then if not enough some criteria apply such as single breadwinner etc... )those rules vary by country AND by field of activity : in France Tech is well protected under an agreement specifically to their branch. Hospitality for instance is way less protected. The last lay off wave in France affected approximately 10% of the subsidiary, where the world average was 5%> so no, it doesn't prevent anything BUT... you get much more severance, nothing comparable here. That is why I heard (confirmation needed) that all of the 200 lay offs in France have been fulfilled by volunteers.
Not true in all cases. For tech companies like Google, American employees got almost 6 month severance. The same as EU/UK. But yes for most other types of companies, you are much safer in Europe as far as pay. But they pay a price bc TC for tech in the US is more than twice as much
they tried and tried then they cried because eu dint budge
