My background is in SWE but I’m part of a rotational program and decided to do a stint of graphic design just to see what it was like. Now with RTO I’m planning on leaving and I’m noticing a discrepancy in interest from other companies. I get tons of messages from recruiters on LI where my title says “software engineer” which is technically true but on all of my applications I list my graphic design role on my resume and haven’t received any follow ups. Am I fucked? Trying to find a SWE job ASAP. It’s not like I forgot how to code. Do I need to just pivot permanently to Visual Design? I feel like the growth in that role won’t be as large. #tech #swe #graphicdesign #fucked? #career #engineering #software
All you need to do is show you can code in an interview/assessment and I can’t see why they’d care.
You just need one company to give you the SWE opportunity. Keep looking, don’t settle :P
You’re fine. Need to list relevant experience. That’s all. If I’m looking for a carpenter and you send me a resume with: 2 y as chef at restaurant 1 y as barista at cafe Then you’ll just confuse me and I’ll have to choose someone else.
You could leave off the graphic design job from your resume, or add a bit more explanation to the intro section: "Software engineer with expertise in XY. Excited about the industry, participated in a rotational program to explore various supporting/adjacent roles, to ultimately become a better SWE." Or something similar.
Just list your graphic design experience somewhere else on your resume.
Just don't put it on your resume when applying for swe roles.
Can you add front-end related projects to help shift the focus.
