Discussing immigration during work - Ebay

I hate discussing immigration related topics at work. My coworkers can't stop talking about it. I just received my green card but haven't disclosed it to any members of my team. Only my manager knows about it. The reason I didnt disclose is coz I am Armenian, and the rest of my team ain't from "The rest of the world". My team still thinks I am waiting for my H1B as I always tell them I am on OPT. technically, I am not lying as my opt is still valid. Team always tells me "You're so lucky! You're Armenian". I hate that. Am I doing the right thing here ?

This immigration system is super unfair

Oath HgUolL72 Jul 1, 2018

I know, but I don’t have to pay for that! I have nothing to do with it! They do not have to put it on me.

I hate discussing money at my village in India. My relatives and old friends can’t stop talking about it. They are always doing mental math even for spending rupees 50. I can easily afford rupees 50 without thinking twice, but haven’t disclosed it to them. Only my parents know about it. The reason i didn’t disclose is coz I am full time employed, and the rest of my relatives and friends there ain’t have “full time employment “. They still think I also struggle financially as I always tell them I am poor. Technically I am not lying as I am still not rich. They always tell me “You’re so lucky! You have a job in America”. I hate that. Am I doing right thing here?

Delete the country from your post as it makes easy to identify you. Most ppl I know would be happy for coworkers who managed to bit this FU immigration system

Yes you are Lucky. Stop acting like you are not. Don't hang out with them or tell them not to talk about it. Grow a pair and stop whining about it.

Did your company sponsor your GC while you're on OPT? Is that even possible? I thought you have to be on H1B to get the process starting? I guess I am becoming like one of your teammates, haha

Informatica uXOE45 Jul 1, 2018

No, you don’t have to be on H1B to start the process or get GC. Infact, people from countries which doesn’t have GC backlog (GC backlog countries- China,India etc) can get GC within an year. Those people won’t apply for H1B, instead they apply for GC while being on F1/L1. This is the reason why you use most of the H1Bs are Chinese or Indians as those are the people who need H1B to work till they get GC(China~=3yrs & India~=151yrs)

Okay, I see.

Wat?

Deloitte XiSA74 Jul 1, 2018

I can totally feel OP. I think telling other people that they are lucky is not a very nice thing to say. (1) It makes the “lucky” person feel like their hard work is not comparable to the luck they have. (2) People assume that the “lucky” person is not humble enough to be appreciative of what they have. (3) Everyone has their own struggles or some luck here and there in life, life has its ups and downs, you have no idea what a person have to go through to get to where they are, so please be respectful and don’t just compare yourself to the others on the surface, and quick to jump to conclusion that they are “lucky”.

Informatica uXOE45 Jul 1, 2018

What you are saying might be true in other scenarios but incase of GC application it’s all about where you born. If you are born in any country other than China(3yrs), India(151yrs) or Philippines(3yrs) then you get your GC in an Year. In this case op’s colleagues might be just saying that he is lucky on a lighter note. Just saying 🤷🏻‍♂️

“It makes the “lucky” person feel like their hard work is not comparable to the luck they have.” Of course not comparable. “Hard Work” is most overrated catch phrase in our generation. Come with me, and I will show you at least a hundred people a day who works harder than you and will still die in penury. The right family and place a person is born make way more difference in outcome than hard work ever does. I am one of those persons who were born to the right parents to have the opportunity to pursue studies. It will be hypocrisy to justify that lottery win as outcome of my “ hard work”. Luck works in strange ways and there is sparsely minimal that a person can do about it apart from abandoning it by being a wastrel. Trying to justify that as hard work is specious.
