Just read their CEO's letter or the essay on wanting their employees to requalify for their jobs by showing up 40% better every year. Feel so fed up with this type of leadership style that seems to be more and more common nowadays. So many things wrong about that attitude. Yes it is a competitive world but I hope that good but most importantly happy teams ultimately win (Airbnb, Square, Google to name a few that are like this in my perception until my bubble bursts about them too) and not the ones that are just ruthless and "literally only want best people" (who doesn't?). Well guess what, best people have a ton of options too #sorryfortherant
I agree but it works for some companies (Amazon, Facebook).
yeah sadly it does and maybe that's why more and more companies are trying to be like them
I don't know how. I left and took a paycut on paper, then ended up making almost the same as I did in SF, but in a 40% LCOLA.
Maybe the CEO needs to improve himself 40% year first
Demand that stock price must go up 40% every year.
I liked the stance Tobi has taken. Read the whole letter, there is too much BS going on related to political ideologies internally to the point it is causing a significant divide among teams. A CEO has to step in with a tough stance in such situations, to remind people this is a for profit organization they are working for, so better deliver results and not cause divide. I admire him for showing spine and being upfront on what is expected. More companies need to do this.
Tough guy!
Helpful context and perspective, thanks for sharing
What does it even mean to improve yourself by 40% year over year? Such bs. Lol.
40% more commits
40% more story points. Make scrum work for you once.
How do you know AirBnB has good WLB? It has a lot of people from Facebook.
Moar impacts!!
They bring the same working style from FB to Airbnb
I would do it only if he cuts his BS by 40% per year.
I thought Shopify was this super chill place to work
Used to be😭
What happened? I saw half execs left too. And I see people on Glassdoor now complaining about wlb. Is it becoming the next Amazon? Becoming the one thing it set out to destroy
I think the point their ceo wants is that people must grow in their current role. Or you’re let go. This isn’t anything new - a number of large companies (minus google) have grow or go policies. Promotion within 2-3 years or you’re let go, minus terminal level roles. Though terminal can change over time.
what are you talking about, Google expect people to grow to L4 as well
Haha funny ^
Shopify is an interesting place to work at because it's both chill and expects a lot from people. One of my favorite things about this place is that it doesn't put a cap on the personal and professional growth you can aim toward. Yes... There are bumps on the road... But if you're a personal growth junkie, this is the place to be.
I mean. A growing company is always like that
Sounds like one of those companies that masks their high expectations and poor working conditions under the guise of being a "startup".
Amazon?
Sounds familiar don't it?
