Should I move to Amazon?
Not a timeshare owner, but I get the impression that there are savings to be had if you: 1) Don't buy from the developer directly, and 2) Work the system to maximize value Sounds like a ton of effort for little benefit.
My wife and her family are massive Disney fans and looked into getting a Disney time share. From what I remember it's not a good time share because they have time limits (large limit but still a limit). This makes it a much less valuable asset than other time shares because your rate isn't locked in forever.
Not worth it. Your maintenance costs take away any savings you might have.
I have had two timeshares and eventually dumped them both. Go to redweek.com and rent timeshare weeks from people who are desperate to rent because they can't use it. Or do airbnb.
Cool thanks! Will check it out.
it was worth it years ago (20+), now it's probably not. I know some that got in early and they call sell their points every year to easily cover maintenance costs and get some extra back.
I got a killer deal at Sunterra in 2004, later bought by Diamond Resorts. Negotiated down to below 50% of first offer after threatening to walk about 4 times. It was a points based system that allowed me to trade in my other timeshare for points any year I wanted to for no trade in fee. The points to book were marked down up to 75% for short notice so it went a long way throught the year. The base points were backed by a deeded timeshare in Lake Tahoe that I never went to. $360/yr maint fees. Later, Diamond Resorts kept twisting my arm to turn in the deed for a share in the trust which was a rip off in higher maintenance fees. I would never bite. Some reps threatened they would drop me but they couldn't.
I bought mine (Hilton) probably 8-9 years ago. Annual usage for ~$500. Of course have the annual maintenance fees but I’ve used it every year to go to Hawaii for much cheaper than I would otherwise
I did the Hilton tour in Hawaii (big island I think?). It was nice and they had a half decent offer I guess but no bite from me. I already had two timeshares.
I bought beachfront ground floor new build in Grand Cayman in 2000. Maintenance fees were originally estimated at $600/yr. 10 years later and after a Cat 4 hurricane direct hit raised insurance rates, the maintenance fee went up to well into the $2000s and housekeeping cut back to one midweek service. Airfare to the island got to well over $600 pp rt from the states. I have no idea what all costs now (sold it many years ago privately). The resort got bought by Wyndham.
It's a scam
Now elaborate.
