A really good distributed systems engineer vs a amateur or mediocre machine learning Engineer, who would make more money, now and in 5 years. Please feel free to comment as to why.
Distributed systems
Both can be important and well paid.
The poll is really confusing. It doesn’t say clearly which one pays more right now and after 5 years.
ML doesn't pay that well unless you are exceptionally good. Reason being it's the hot thing everyone wants to do right now.
Not really. Of course nobody is going to pay you lots of money to plug features into prebuilt models and run train or just do hyperparameter sweeps. I can teach a good SDE to do this in a few days. You do need to know a lot to be an effective Applied Scientist or ML Engineer - but "exceptionally good"? Not really.
Depends how good you are. Both can be high rewarding if you are really good.
Why not both? ML systems can also be distributed
I think the combination of both is what pays well.
