I know this is a touchy topic, but my team just had an internal meeting regarding “diversity.” The take away was basically, “we shouldn’t hire any more white people, because we need to be more diverse.” This struck me as wrong. First off, not only is our team diverse, with folks from Asia as well as Europe (yes not all white people are the same), but we also come from a variety of tech backgrounds too. It’s far more diverse than past teams I’ve been on. Could this technically be a violation of law ? Isn’t this technically racist hiring ? We even went over certain universities we didn’t want to target (most white ones) because of said diversity. I get the need to pull people from different backgrounds and cultures. It just race ? It’s just wrong. #tech #Diversity #hiring

Saying it’s “far more diverse than previous teams” isn’t an indication of anything since we do not know what the baseline is or was. What were the reasons cited for seeking out more diversity?

well it is. if there a concrete proof that this was intentional.. i know of a recruiter friend who kept all the internal documents as proof and later sued the hell out of that company. the company has said to not hire whites and he was white himself.
Did they say let’s try to hire more diverse people or did they say let’s not hire more white people? Or did they say let’s not hire more Europeans? There is a difference and conflating it doesn’t help the discussion. And feel free to whine to HR. Unless you are actually correct about the law. (From your post, I don’t actually see discrimination/labor laws implicated.)… HR will just note your complaint in a file. If you are correct that this implicated one of the federal or state protections not to make hiring decisions based on race, color, religion, or other protected class, it becomes evidence. If you are wrong and you are part of the problem well…
Diverse means non white
Fair point sounds like I shouldn’t complain. But it is just wrong you know? Like we specifically talked about excluding certain universities.
First of all diversity isn't just non white people. Its diversity of thought which comes from having people with different backgrounds and upbringing. I would love to work in a team where everyone has had a different upbringing, social class and schooling. Instead we end up with a bunch of people who've all gone to top tier schools with rich parents. Just because someone is black or Indian doesn't mean they're gonna offer a different perspective. Optics is the only thing this approach improves
And all of us do, which is interesting. Hence “more diverse than last teams” where everyone went to a TT school in USA or Abroad
Optics is usually the reason for more diversity. Lets be seen to be hiring more minorities. Yet not many senior leadership hires will be minorities and from a modest upbringing.
