At my company we have two diversity hires that I’m aware of and I believe it’s impossible for them to be fired. But we have to keep them on board for legal indemnification (protection from discrimination lawsuit). One guy is very hard to work with. He’s been here two years and someone on my team threatened to quit if he ever had to work with him. The problem is he is too cocky and doesn’t take input from his team. He makes estimates without consulting any of the people doing the real work. He also has a permanent leg brace so he’s a racial minority and disabled, which is ultimate victimhood status. The higher ups decided to do a reorg for the sole purpose of getting his teammates away from him. Another girl on my team is a backend intern and she is terrible. She’s basically just playing the system. She comes from a small school on the east coast where students do a ton of internships. I mean an absurd amount like NINE internships before they graduate. She has an internship lined up with amazon next summer so she feels like hot shit. But the only reason why she’s getting hired is because she’s a woman and knows how to play the interview game. She does not do shit plain and simple. Literally 90% of the time when I glance at her screen she has an error message on her IDE and on her other window she’s writing a gigantic slack message to who knows who. She’s the only one on our team who keeps a privacy screen on her laptop. She does that because she knows she slacks off. She doesn’t put in the due diligence to get up to speed on the code base and frameworks. I take the initiative to ask if she needs help and she says no. The higher ups were seriously considering cutting the internship short but decided not to because she could potentially slander us on Glassdoor and no one wants to deal with that. What sucks about all this is that I’m a minority myself. Examples like the above constantly make me think the only reason why I got the job was because of my diversity status. I mean I didn’t fail the interviews but I’m sure there were other people just as good or better than me so did I only get the job to fulfill a quota? I am delivering on time and my boss says I’m killing it but it still makes me wonder if I was a white male would I have gotten the job in the first place. Will there ever be a day when we reject identity politics?
The most qualified person should get the job but spreading your sourcing channel to all universities (high and low ranked) is important to make sure the sourcing pipeline of talent is available for anyone willing to try. Your management is promoting mediocrity.
I have worked at a lot of places, and have seen lots of normal hires who exactly fit the description you gave. Incompetent, untouchable, and worst thing they seem to rise up the ranks. So what's your point?
The point is that diversity initiatives increase the proportion of unqualified workers. I’m not saying if you get rid of diversity initiatives then 100% if workers will be competent. I’m saying the proportion would increase.
He gets big mad when he thinks people from other groups get hired. He's probably lying about both of them.
I don’t understand the intern scenario. Interns are time limited, let them screw around and don’t give them an offer at the end, easy
That’s exactly what the company decided
That's how I've heard of it working elsewhere. She sounds annoying as shit, but just be happy that she won't be sticking around like the other guy.
You're just speculating what the higher ups are doing. If the girl got an internship at Amazon, it was certainly not a diversity hire. Why don't you apply to other companies. If you fail the interview, you'll figure out that you were probably a diversity hire. Since you're so hell-bent on being PC, you should quit your job immediately after. On a serious note, just be the best you can be and ignore what others are doing.
Being an intern at Amazon doesn’t mean anything. I️ interned there recently, and the interview process is an absolute joke( I️ got the offer by just completing an online assessment). The online assessment itself is pretty easy, pretty much the same difficulty banks such as JpMorgan give
Haha anyone with a pulse can get an amazon internship
This reeks of confirmation bias.
And you reek of denial
This reeks of confirmation bias about confirmation bias.
Most interns are like that... Distracted. If they don't have enough on their plate or there isn't a clear deliverable or a milestone defined, they tend to be relaxing. Diverse or not there are dicks in IT. Just look at the responses on blind. I don't think their diversity is the root cause but they are horrible people to work with
IT hasn’t cornered the market on dicks, they’re everywhere. IT is froth with passive aggressive DBs though.
It’s hard to fire anyone, not just diversity folks. People need to document it if this guy is being a jerk. Otherwise there’s little that can be done. But based on your consents with an internal you’re just saying you spend a bunch of time tracking what the diverse folks at your company are doing. That seems like a really useful way to spend your time. Finding 2 examples of lame behavior by diverse folks will definitely show your superiority.
Why do you think it takes a bunch of time to come up with the conclusions I did? All it takes is a couple of conversations with coworkers and a glance at my interns laptop a few times a week.
Well then you’re just a gossip who is drawing conclusions with very little data.
Having an error message on the your screen doesn’t say anything about your coding skills . I mean we all get errors and try to find them especially if you are working with a new technology. She is an intern and don’t expect her to perform like a full timer and I think you have a beef with this girl. Why do you spent your time looking at her screen all the time? Are you jealous because she is getting all the internship? This is probably a black vs black war. I’m black myself and I know how we treat each other
The intern is not black she’s a Hispanic woman. My manager and coworkers talk bad about her because she is putting in no effort. She literally ALWAYS has error messages on her screen. Why do I not see the same with anyone else? And why is she always typing long messages on slack? How come when the manager asks her to read an article over a specific design pattern, a week later she still hasn’t read it or able to apply the concepts in code? She asks simple basic questions that she should have asked on day one. It shows a complete lack of drive to learn.
If she’s not putting in a lot of effort maybe it’s because she works with a bunch of asses who talk shit about her. Or maybe as an intern she’s still learning and is running into issues. Maybe she’s typing long questions trying to learn. Maybe if you were a decent human you would try to help the intern instead of talk behind her back.
If your manager says you are killing it, why do you think you are a diversity hire? Stop limiting yourself with this low self esteem baggage.
Because it’s also possible someone outperformed me during the interviews but they went with me because I’m a minority. I don’t like that.
Diversity hire = reverse racism Qualified hire regardless of race/gender etc is the correct approach.
Can there be moral desert alongside distributive justice?
@Jef Of course not, the veil of ignorance obviates personal responsibility
