To all my managers on blind, are diversity quotas a real thing when hiring candidates/building out your teams? Are there rewards/punishments for not hitting yearly targets? #tech #career
Yes of course
What is the breakdown?
At Snap we only source minority candidates for the first month of every quarter. But we don't discriminate!
Damn.
define minority
DEI initiatives are fake news. It’s merely a ploy to underpay minorities under the guise of appearing progressive. Next time you see them campaigning their DEI initiative ask yourself why they aren’t openly campaigning for employees with disabilities? It’s because they don’t have any incentive to which is why the federal government requires large enterprises/companies to have 7% of their workforce comprised of employees with a disability.
Why push to hire more minorities just to underpay them?
Because it’s cheaper and often times these folks are just as capable, or more capable.
I know someone pretty hire up at Netflix who was fired after he repeatedly failed to fill the DEI quota.
How do you know that was the main reason?
Because he was warned again and again before being let go
I remember one informational interview at a large company who I'll not name. The white VP guy told me that he has a lot of openings but he will only hire women or underrepresented minorities. He did. He was also promoted after.
I know Blind hates this, but it’s true that women and minorities (black, Latinos) are very much underrepresented. It’s a good thing to try to source (key word) from these groups to see if representation can be increased
lol blind is going to absolutely hate this comment
Well, I see that is a sign majority on the Blind have morals. Good.
No, quotas on the basis of a protected classification are generally unlawful, unless remedying a prior pattern of discrimination.
Who cares about laws? Universities had been willfully discriminating against Asians and Supreme Court confirmed that it is unlawful. I don't think that they will stop even now.
Because what the universities were doing was lawful at the time, based on prior court cases. Whereas hiring quotas are generally unlawful, already.
I have found that anyone who is overly preoccupied with diversity quotas is incredibly unpleasant to work with.
@Snowflake, may I DM?
Sure
Is the DEI quota attempting to interview people from different backgrounds or purely based on hiring?
Both
I think setting a quota to source and interview diverse groups is useful but hiring not as much. Wouldn’t you agree?
Yes, college major quota for new grads. When hiring for a team of 15 new grad SWEs, we aim for 6 CS majors, 1 Computer Engineering, 1 EE, 1 other engineering, 1 natural sciences, 0-1 math. This is the guideline that’s proven to be the optimal team with a wide range of relevant skill sets…so the reward is having a productive team.
