It’s been about 6 months since I joined as an L4 SDE. I’ll be honest, I’m not liking it here to what its advertised as from the outside. I’m working on a dull/boring project which I have zero motivation on, my co-workers barley interact with me and think I’m incompetent (maybe I’m over-leveled?). Collaboration is not really a thing, co-workers are busy working on their own KR's which we have zero visibility towards, CL’s take forever to review (what takes 1 day to push out at a smaller company will take at least 1 week here, and that's being generous) and managers shy away from concrete feedback (they tend to give CME/SI ratings unless you royally fucked up). Most Googlers are nice, but some are just annoying and outright arrogant. Most people are extremely ambitious to the point it can be miserable to work with them. For example if I ask for clarification on some requirements, my co-workers thinks I am wasting his time and tells me to go ask some other person... The compensation and benefits are nice, but the engineering culture here feels very very artificial. If you are from a smaller company where things move faster and collaborating with co-workers is encouraged (my previous company had KR's tied between two people, so it encouraged people to work together and collaborate), the culture at google will feel very alien. I am looking to switch teams, but I’m curious to know if all teams at Google are like this… I decided to take this team during team matching since I can always switch teams after 1 year (which may have been a bad idea cause I joined this team knowing zero C++). I also think I may have been over-leveled.. I have completed close to 1k Leetcode problems and regularly compete in coding contests, so attending coding style interviews is a skill that I naturally have, regardless of my average SDE experience relative to Google SDE's. What did you expect going in?
You're in the wrong team. There's a lot of decent velocity (admittedly high velocity is not something I've seen here) teams with interesting work. They may be hard to find right now with the headcount shortages, but as someone who's worked here across 3 orgs, I know what you experienced isn't the norm.
> Here’s why I don’t like Google > Googler: you’re on the wrong team This almost feels like borderline invalidation and gaslighting
TIL assuring someone that not all teams are like this is gaslighting.
There's a reason why they call Google n Microsoft rest n vest
Yea, thats one way to look at it. I just feel de-motivated to go into work... but I guess I should be grateful.
3.5 is good money for your years. If you’re pushing for a new opportunity, push for equiv salary but remote
Sounds right
Well, I basically feel the same way...
