Currently a sys admin working primarily with windows infrastructure. I'm focused on "automation" and systems. I have an A.S. in Comp. Sci. and ~4 years professional IT exp. Currently working on MCSE Cloud Platforms via MCSA Linux on Azure. Should I even bother finishing my B.S.? I don't feel like I make enough money or have enough time to finish... Certifications seem like they may have a bigger bang for buck...
Only to get passed the HR screen. Otherwise you can learn the rest by yourself with nothing but a compiler and internet connection.
Nope. No degree here (not even AS) and total comp over $200k
Yes you need it...
Depends, if you're a wiz kid maybe not. But you need the first opportunity, which can be hard. And you have to kick ass out of the gate. The degree gets you in the door and gives you skills. If you have the skills then you just need to get in the door.
Well put
No degree here, currently at Tesla, but have worked at Intel, MS, Apple, HP, and some smaller companies. Make about $150k in base pay. As a Reliability Engineer, experience and knowledge matter way more than the degree. At MS, I was a manager of 7 techs and 3 engineers.
Not need but with it easier to get in the door
You need Leetcode 👍
Do you need it? No. Does it help? Probably. I never finished mine. Mucked about for a couple years. Found a job as a contractor doing mind numbing task. Learned more and more. Now, I'm fte and I manage the whole stack. All under 5 years. Ive worked IT. Degree doesn't mattter as much as, whether or not you can do the work. Certs will help in some positions. Either, keep learning a lot of everything until you have the opportunity to really find/build your strengths. Or. Just go all in on 1 strength. I opted for the former.
Microsoft doesn't have a strict requirement but it's only if you're exceptional.
No degree here worked @ Microsoft, 96k a year.
And a steady supply of Adderal
how ?
