I started last year at Amazon as an L4 program manager. After 7 months I was promoted to L5 program with a % pay increase, then after 3 more months I was moved to L5 Product with another % increase. I'm in line for another promotion to L6 Sr. Product in 6 months, which is another % increase. Since the % is on a lower starting salary, do I need to change companies to get a more fair compensation for my role? Would it be hard to move with only 1 YOE?
Probably
No
Amazon will pay you at right level for the role, it’s not based on %
Yes
Amazon doesn’t promote that quickly...makes no sense (or cents?)
Agree
Almost always
How in the world are you going from L4 program manager to L6 product manager in 1.5 years? What team is this? Also, you won't necessarily get a small % hike, you'll at least get what that job band's minimum salary is. I was so underpaid as an L5, my promo hike to L6 was 40%
He got down levelled when he joined.
Even so, L5 to L6 with with a job family upgrade in one year is crazy. Unless he got really badly down leveled, it doesn't add up
Yes
I definitely wouldn’t expect such an accelerated upward trajectory after you move to L6. What you’ve experienced is far outside the normal timelines. If you want more after L6—and soon—you should move companies. Otherwise, enjoy the ride!
