Over the past few days I have been working on updating my online portfolio of work. Marketing and operational positions are highly competitive and I suspect my resume looks just like everyone else's even though I've optimized it to death. My thought is that instead of sending in resumes I'll reach out directly to hiring managers on LinkedIn with my online portfolio. I have a lot of digital experience that differentiates me but I think it's better to show and not just tell. I just have to make sure it's clear there is no confidential material on there. I'm thinking I can shoot over a link to my portfolio site where I have three resumes optimized for each of my three areas of expertise as opposed to one custom resume for every job posting. This will be a huge time savings for me and it might help me land something where I'm allowed more freedom to think outside the box. Anyone here use a portfolio or a micro site to apply for jobs before? Any success or tips you can share?
my problem is nearly everything I do is under NDA
My comment below was intended as a reply here.
Yeah, I'm having to revise a lot of it and use lots of censor bars for anything that might be seen as confidential in nature. I'm also using a password protected site so the content isn't tagged for search engines (at least I'm hoping that's how it works). The final test is I am not showing anything that isn't already publicly disclosed information.
The robots.txt file is what you want in addition to being password protected. Just look it up. But you probably already have it. Depending on HOW confidential - maybe only present in person. That's the general rule - you can show 'anything' in person. *obviously there are still restrictions depending
Yeah, I gotta get a robots file in there, too. Thanks for the reminder. Confidential is proprietary info such as financial forecast info, coding, manufacturing pictures, and then confidential messages on business strategy. Am I leaving anything out? I'm lucky much of the stuff I've worked on is already out there in the public domain.
