Do companies need proof of competing offer?

Interviewed with a handful of companies, including Meta, Airbnb, Coinbase, and Snap. I will use the offers to negotiate, but am wondering if the recruiters require proof - documents, screenshots, emails, etc. I would prefer not to show any proof, and just say "I have offer X from company Y". Is this enough to be able to negotiate? Old TC: 235k YOE: 6 New offers numbers are incoming, so don't have any to share right now. #meta #airbnb #coinbase #snap #negotiate

Colleagues at Google told me that their recruiters did not ask for proofs right away, but they were asked to provide the proof later, after they got Google's offer.

Imagine lying about it and not having a real offer, i want to be a fly on that wall

Always say you have an offer to negotiate for more. If HR wants to see an offer letter just find one and photoshop/edit what you need to

Worst suggestion ever, please don't lie to the company you are going to join. Might have really bad implications down the line if they found out

+1 @oncalleng. I think recruiters would be able to tell and have a lot of information on other company offers

Most companies won’t give you a letter unless you verbally accept. Just let the recruiter know that. Also don’t lie.

Yeah. Thats more than enough. Iam talking to amazon, microsoft and bloomberg. All three are talking to me verbally and wants to go.ahead with the offer only after Iam ready to accept their numbers. Plays well for me

This is also part of the psychological game of negotiation. Recruiters and hiring managers are well within their rights to ask you for competing offers, especially if you are explicitly leveraging them in your negotiations. You also have the right to refuse, but that makes it look like they just called your bluff. It’s all a game. Ultimately, your leverage is your ability to walk away from an offer and convince others of that fact.

Generally speaking, no. Companies generally won't give you the written offer unless you have agreed to sign and recruiters are aware of this fact.

You should be able to get verbal numbers from everyone. Just take these verbal numbers to the recruiters. Google was the only company out of the 6 I had offers from that wouldn't negotiate without a written offer.
