Context - live walking distance to work, 35-40 hours a week, total TC $150k. Don’t live in Seattle. I ask because it feels like all of the Googlers I know and follow on Instagram live more interesting lives than me or my coworkers most of whom have roommates despite being L5/L6.
If you believe Instagram is reality, I got bad news for you. I mean more money doesn't hurt, but definitely not far off from any FAANG people.
But aren’t I in fang?
Amazon teaches frugality from day 1. Amazonians apply that in their personal life as well.
I grew up “frugal” and that’s not something I want in adulthood
Good if you think that way but not everyone does. I have seen Amazonian doing nickel and dime, even though it was not their money. I imagine how would they do with their personal money.
Does it matter? You can always find other with more- more money, more time, more youth, more attractive girlfriend... Quit comparing. Enjoy your life!
That’s purely a lifestyle choice. I know people at Facebook and Netflix making 400+ tc and living in a shared apartment setup, driving a used Camry.
I'd look better if I wasn't being woken up in the middle of the night for some Sev 2.
I wish I could have that setup. Lifestyle creep always rears its ugly head esp. when you're around acquaintances at a BBQ. People want you to buy a house and stop renting... Excuse me? My apartment and everything combined is less than your home with taxes and utilities. Hey, I drive a beat up Prius with 160K miles, you can go ahead and buy that new Tesla... I'll be waiting around until that Tesla hits the used car market.
Level is off one at Amazon vs FB/G
Lol. No.
No they don't. Just perks like free food. Seattle is much cheaper so you will have a better standard of living. Google will have better wlb than fb and Amazon but that's it
They probably aren't going on-call and getting late night pages for legacy systems, so yes.
My team doesn’t have oncall
I don’t know, but I do know that people at Microsoft have it good! Even before I started working here, I loved walking around the campus and admiring the gardens and fountains. I would totally hang out at work on the weekends, but my wife thinks that’s strange. People here seem pretty generous too. And the Redmond PRO Sports Club that we get to use for free is a one-of-a-kind experience!
Social media is not reality.
I have friends there too!
