Saved some money to travel the world, but was wondering if that will negatively effect career in the future
- Google “NDA template”, fill in dates - Print out, sign it, keep it in your desk - Interview with company. If they ask about career gap - “Sorry, I signed an NDA and can’t discuss that”
I am curious as to what this NDA is about? I mean in genuine scenarios. They can argue that it's okay to not disclose the company name but at least mention it as anonymous or something?
@morgan sorry I just signed an NDA. Can't answer your question
WOW congrats!!! I’m hoping to do the same so following
Two years is not very long over your career. Have fun!
I took a year off, and it didn’t hurt me with Google, Riot, Meta, or Amazon
How did you explain it?
I explained why I left the prior role, and then shared a few sabbatical activities that I did. Which weren’t as interesting as traveling like you did. Most of the time people didn’t even ask. It seemed like the old school recruiters cared the most. For example, Ford couldn’t seem to let it go, so I just passed on them. I needed that mental break bad, and I think I was more confident in discussions because of it.
Yes. I've been asked about a month long gap when I was relocating from one coast to another without a job in hand knowing I'd find one quick. Newer tech companies may care a little less but more legacy companies care much, much more.
It won’t. When asked, tell the story of travels; most people love the idea. To be blunt it’s never impacted me (I’ve done it a few times) and as a HM I don’t care about gaps.
This is the correct answer. Also a hiring manager who does consider team chemistry and values people with thought diversity: a common trait of well traveled individuals.
Just add “Traveled the World” on resume. Add one or two points about its impact if you can think of something.
Can you share your YOE?
If you don't have a good explanation, no self-respecting manager is going to simply give you a pass at any company except for one where they expect people to stay there for a short period of time. Think carefully about what would impress you as a hiring manager -- traveling the world might work if you gained something from the experience.
