I’ve been contacted by recruiting but not sure I want to start the process with Rivian because I’ve heard really mixed reviews. I have one big worry: that Rivian is still a startup which means, and is especially true in tech, that there’s lots of politics and people are focused on pleasing higher-ups rather than actually making a good product and solving interesting problems. is that true at Rivian?
Pay is 🥜 They sell you the IPO dream
I've know someone that works there, they say they can't disagree with the reviews on blind.
The reviews are so mixed on blind though. Most blind posts involve bad recruiting manners, not what it’s actually like to work there. Tell your friend to post here! I’m looking for a place where I can solve interesting problems, have nice co-workers, and not have to deal with politics. I’m so sick of politics in tech I’m ready to just move to Thailand and sell coconuts on the beach just to do something more meaningful with my time than babysit people with fragile egos and an inflated sense of importance.
I’ve been here for 3 years. It depends on your team and work. I work with nice people, they are probably my favorite part of the culture. I get to solve problems that challenge and interest me and I get to decide how much I chew off. My wlb is good. I get to voice my opinion and no one gets mad (unlike my last employer). If you’re a go getter who likes people and to resolve conflict with logical solutions, it’s a great place. If you’re a drama queen who is focused on politics, there is plenty of that to take up your time too. Edit- yes I am underpaid.
Poor life balance and pay is 🥜 Being working here for over a year now. Not a true tech company. Poor software engineering practices
This is the response I’ve heard most often. Really gives me pause. Thanks for the response.

Why do u want to leave Uber for rivian ? They won’t be able to match tc
Uber is so political, everyone is fighting over their tiniest domain, no one wants to collaborate, innovation is dead. I would take a pay cut to be on a healthy team that collaborates, can have adult dialogue, productively criticizes work for the good of the product and is able to implement innovative ideas. I’m not sure Rivian is the place as I’ve heard they’re a fake tech company riddled with unhealthy childish politics. But I’m looking for something better and Rivian reached out. Let me know if you know of a different company that might be a better fit. I’m open to all suggestions.
How’s Walmart?
“Poor WLB”: don’t know how to manage my time efficiently and stand up for myself “Paid 🥜”: accepted the job offer knowing exactly what the comp is, but now I’m unhappy I didn’t negotiate better If you’re coming from big tech, it’s no where near as bad and if you have a strong interview, they will make the comp right. Whenever we have a candidate that gets a strong yes across the board, the recruiters job switches to ensuring we lock that candidate down.
Thanks for the reply! How are office politics and leadership? Is it a yes-man culture where people expect you to not ask questions and everyone’s territorial? Or is it a place that truly values expert perspectives and new ideas and innovation? One guy on here from Rivian already called me a “d-bag” for asking this question, which definitely made me worry about the culture there. What’s your perspective? I’m truly just trying to make the best choice here because I don’t want to leave Uber just to start all over again and be stuck with the same ‘ol office politics that make people embrace mediocre work so not to make waves.
Every place has bad apples, and Rivian is not immune. The only thing I can say though is the ratio of awesome people to assholes is significantly lower then the previous companies I have been at. Sorry about the person calling you a d-bag, they’re likely miserable because they think they are underpaid blah blah blah. If you’re someone who is confident in their assumptions/data and willing to speak up, you’ll handle the politics just fine. However this is all dependent on group specific leadership on yes-man vs do the right thing culture. If you’re looking for the perfect fluffy job where everyone is stress free and no hard decisions are being made, Rivian won’t give you that.
“…. startup which means, and is especially true in tech, that there’s lots of politics and people are focused on pleasing higher-ups rather than actually making a good product” WHAT!?
You don’t understand the critique I’ve made about startups? It’s simply from personal experience so if you reject the premise, that’s fine, but I would love to hear your alternative perspective.
My company Argo has some of this management-pleasing mentality that Uber describes... That being said, healthy startups trust their employees and give them lot of autonomy in their work.
