Do you ever feel like the dumbest person on your team?

I can't believe I even got hired, honestly. I'm always messing everything up and need to ask everyone else for help. Everyone else seems so much more competent than me, and they get things done so much faster than I do. Given that I just got a promotion, I know it's probably impostor syndrome, but I can't convince myself that it's a perception and not actually being an idiot. It seems like every example I think of where I did something, there were a million things that didn't go well and need to be improved. I keep waiting to get PIPed, and this promotion makes me even more afraid, because the expectations are even higher now. Do you ever feel this way?

Honestly? Same... :(

You at Cisco?

Honestly, this is a good thing. You're on the right team then - learn from everyone!

That's a nice way to look at it. But I'm so terrified of PIP if I'm the worst person on the team.

According to blind, everyone gets PIPed eventually - no reason to keep worrying about it. Just focus on learning from everyone on your team, if they are really better than you

do you have a mentor at work you can talk about this with? that might help. does sound a lot like typical imposter syndrome

Amazon -___- OP Oct 28, 2018

Yeah. We just got connected a month ago, so we're not very close, but I'll see if I can bring this up. I just didn't want to inconvenience them...though I guess that's the point.

Impostor syndrome. Grow up. Work on selling yourself a little, like those sons and daughters of mothers and fathers who don’t do shit all day but always talk about how hard they work.

I used to feel like the dumbest person when I had joined my current team. Manager was secong guessing me left and right. The annual review results proved that it was all in my head. I even have my own intern now and the manager is very happy with everything in general. Bottom line: it's ok to feel dumb. It's even more ok to be dumb every once in a while. The important thing is to do your best and try to feel less dumb everyday. "Fake it till you make it"

I make it a point to be the dumbest person on a team, since there is only one direction from there. There is something very humbling in being one, and it makes you more susceptible to others’ ideas.

Sometimes, but mostly don't care anymore. I'd just like some more cash and some walls in this office.

Its imposter syndrome, but I always find imposter syndrome is rooted in some truth to it. I used to have it because i was being complacent, you need to keep learning and push yourself so you don’t feel this way and your self esteem doesn’t take a hit.
