I freaking hate it here. In California I never worried about the politics, people are more liberal and accepting. As an immigrant, I feel discriminated in Texas. Planning to come back to Bay Area once offices open.
Can you give some examples of racism or hate. Are you Indian or Chinese?
Yikes
Compare to Bay Area, Austin is boring at its best, but what i like is the food and rustic atmosphere.
Lol wut? The _only_ part of the bay area that's any fun at all is SF (and maybe some of Oakland), and even in those places you can't walk 10 feet without hearing someone talk about their startup. At least in Austin you don't drown in tech
"The _only_ part of the bay area that's any fun at all is SF (and maybe some of Oakland)" Really? Sanborn park, horse shoe lake, alum rock, Vanessa park, jfs park, mission point... are just few of wonderful nature breathtaking places to hike or get away from it all. And all within the valley. "and even in those places you can't walk 10 feet without hearing someone talk about their startup. At least in Austin you don't drown in tech" Folks who are in start-up are driven for a cause, a mission for which they are willing to take pay cut or no pay for sometime and take risks. Folks who want to grow usually love being around these purpose driven people and conversations. Purpose that impact community and the world. You seem to be one of those Austin folks that fall in the crowd of "pretentious" wanna be rich or are rich but don't truly have any meaningful purpose. Be humble genuinely....
As a Asian i had not so good experience visiting Texas few years ago. So even when i had a chance I didn’t take the call.
Which part
The place is close to Houston. May be 30 mile away or so.
I am non-white and I also felt out of place and discriminated when I was at Austin. People look at you differently, it’s a vibe very hard to explain. It’s like being in a school where no one wants to look at you, and if you come in their way, they smirk and get irritated just because you exist. To be fair though, there is also a liberal part of Austin which was absolutely great. In the Bay Area, I feel people are welcoming. They are friendly, and they don’t judge. Some may still not like you, but they don’t make you feel as if you are a piece of shit from a third world country.
Totally agree with you.
I feel the opposite, people might look at you wierdly but they are for the most part super genuine. And also not everyone you see on the road works in big tech and I find thag quite refreshing
Texas is awesome. Austin or Dallas are both good.
This. I don't get close-minded immigrants who want to call "racist" and "weird experience" anytime they get the slightest hint of an unpleasant experience.. no wonder cooping up like frogs in a well in the Bay area works well for them. I've been through many grocery stores in TX, and as a brown person if I encounter the situations people here are talking about (happens less than 50% of the time), I'll just smile and disarm the other side and proceed to make smalltalk. Most people are friendly once they see you're willing to make an effort rather than stay an alien. "assimilating" is a two way street. People on this thread can keep bidding millions on 1950s shacks with decaying allergen building material, because they'd rather call most of USA racist than try and blend into the home they adopted.
I agree with G. Californians have such a warped perception of the rest of the US. Anything that isn’t meeting there diversity quota is inherently racist. They’re like the laughing stock of the country and wonder why most people don’t like them.
Bay area for the win ! 🙌
I hated every minute of living there. Austin is such a one note town. So glad to be back on the west coast
Glad to see you get out
I agree with @Nike Austin is so so overhyped
Texas is great if you are white. I will never move to Texas in my life. I am fine living in the bubble
I’m Mexican and most Mexicans I know love it here. Cool story though.
Agreed, white people in Texas feel themselves whiter than any where else in th US.
Looking at all the above comments it feels like the plight of immigrants is such that they didn’t choose the Bay Area, Bay Area chose them
Meh
I have lived in the south and in the blue cities. I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I say that I had some “experience” daily. Be it to find a seat in a restaurant or in grocery store. After that o realized that a lot of folks are just straight up jealous of Blue city folks because well, we all make way more than them and we are people of color. Bay Area is amazing compared to that.
I visited Austin once. It's an awesome city
Did you move in the last three years?
