Confused on whether to pursue MS in Computer Science or not after 5 years in the industry. (Edited) for those voting on Yes, it has an advantage. What kind of advantages do you see from an MS degree? Yoe: 5 TC: 187k
Depends on why you want to do it. If is for money probably won’t help.
Yeap.. all about the $$
Save your student loan
And also the opportunity cost that comes with not working.
Correct. I never believed in post graduation in general as a real leg up for career. Do it only if you have F u money lying around and genuinely interested in the specialization subject
Worthless, industry experience is more valuable for career growth
MS is good if you want to move to the US & earn $$$. The other reason to pursue it could be switching to a different domain. I can't see any other reasons, especially at 5 yoe.
cuz you won't have to depend on the h1b lottery or your employer to have a job in US .. MS provides a sure shot path to a job in the US market
no, i'm saying that doing MS will at least give an opportunity to work & earn in the US. otherwise you have to depend either on your employer or find an employer ready to sponsor your h1b lottery to get you into US (very rare).
Either if it is a HYPSM school or funded MS And you want to be like a director
If your long term career plan is to stay in software development and grow to an architect or senior manager , an MS is not going to help. But if you want to specialize, e.g. NLP etc, go for it. But do MS with a thesis option.
Personally a masters tends to be a downside. They generally think they are more educated and more deserving than their colleagues. Also the work ethic in academia does not match the way I like to run my team If I was hiring for L7+ it would probably be a plus but I don’t operate in that space so I haven’t given it much thought
MS is kind of a pathway to the US for international students. So many enroll for the program without knowing the real purpose.
Do you think an MS is required if my goal is to work at Google ?
no value, it's all meaningless
At almost all universities, you’ll see that 90% of the class is international students who want to immigrate to the US. Student visa is the easiest way to do that and you also get 3 years of work auth. But if you’re a US citizen hoping that MS would enhance your skills, then there’s no point in spending so much. Most of what I learnt during MS was via youtube and coursera. And I haven’t seen this MS degree come in handy when applying at jobs. I was considered a new grad just like someone with only a bachelors

I think it depends on your role. Software , dev, data science etc ?
Software with no intention to switch to AI or Data Science.
Then it probably won't help Software values skills over educational qualifications.
