I lately see LOTS of posts on blind about Total Compensation, money, stock, houses, net worth and other materialistic BS. While a good competition is good, I think it makes those with less $ feel worse of a professional/human. Especially given Covid. So why not list your good deeds instead ? Money comes and goes, but a helping hand is never forgotten. This year I paid for someone’s eye surgery, contributed significantly to someone getting a prosthetic leg, sent a decent size (500+boxes) lot of crayons/pencils and coloring books to a charity for children. This on top of monthly donations to anti-suicide causes and charity orgs helping the poor. My NW is close to 1M for those wondering. How was your year ?
I don’t make enough to do good deeds (student loans) but I will serve as a chair member in a historic area that works to restore/preserve all buildings.
Upped overall donations to cancer, BLM and covid causes last year. Donated to children in need during the holidays. Contributed to known and unknown go-fund me pages related to sickness and death.
I became mentor for several Hackathons and giving a lot of advices to random people who want to break into DS. I will probably start doing charity when my salary getting better (TC 56k after 20% salary reduction :-( )
One of my best projects is coming to “seeing results” phase. I’ve been helping someone (struggling with addiction) for past few years with school (cuz he went back to school in 30s to become swe after seeing me have money for shit all the time). I helped him with courses sometimes. More just talked and provided supporting ear to bounce ideas off of. He started with a community college. Then was able to move to SJSU. Anyways. Now he’s ready for internships. He’s gonna start applying soon. I’ve been helping with LC/resume/LinkedIn. Coaching on how to approach recruiters etc. he’s never held a desk job. So sort of coaching on general etiquettes of an office job. Soon he will get his first internship and then a high paying swe job. 😀. Cant wait for that day!
Sounds really rewarding. Great job!
Keep it up! Hope he's grateful for all your efforts.
That's awesome op! I volunteer teaching after school programs with kids in under funded schools and elderly who need training using computers for basic jobs. Spring I coach boys team at a school near by In summer habitat for humanity. I'm a great human being 🤷♂️ For people who are curious, I found organizations have more shortage of volunteers than donations, but they also need donations
TC? YOE? Lol
