Do you prefer working from home or in office?

I keep reading people saying that "The 2020's is the decades which starts to make WFH the new normal" and "Companies that don't switch to WFH will fail" and I couldn't disagree more. Sure, is it nice to WFH every now and then, certainly. A couple times a month, max.....sure. But who wants to WFH all the time or even a majority of the time? In the tech industry, most offices are so awesome, nice, modern and offer tons of perks like free lunch, snacks and even the infamous Facebook gelato. I enjoy working with people, and I enjoy working in a nice office. I enjoy having badass conference rooms with huge whiteboards in order to spec out my work. It's also so much easier to work in person with my team as well. Sure, a zoom or hangouts or slack video call with screen share can work.....but it isn't as efficient and many times issues arise. Not only technical issues, but just practical issues as well. If tech companies start to sell their office spaces and try WFH, that would be so sad in my opinion. Anyone asking for this, doesn't understand what they are giving up and what they are asking for either. What do you think?

Why isnt there a middle ground? There are invaluable aspects to both, so the best roles are the flexibility to choose when and where to work from.

Because all companies would prefer to just not rent/buy NYC or SF real estate. If we even hint towards we prefer WFH, I fear that's all that will be left in large part. I agree we can have a middle ground, which in my mind is WFH a few times a months.

No, there can be shared spaces. Come in whenever/work it out with your team and take an open spot. You dont need to have a cube or desk for every single head. Saves overall office space in the big picture. Thats how my team operated pre-covid; we just came in whenever, usually 50/50.

Dude, even those of us with amazing free food are happy to WFH! And you’re cribbing about not going to work🙄 WFH let’s you sleep through boring meetings, watch movies or do your own work when you have slack time. Too much to miss for the benefits of interacting and eating free food.

Sounds like a scrubby work ethic to me. Plus, I enjoy seeing human beings and making friends, not sitting at home all day like a hermit. WFH is cool for 75 year old men. Also, you can't sleep through a meeting because you work from home? You still need to remote in via Zoom, etc. You can also watch movies at work, if you choose to. You can also leave work early, if you finish early. Working from home is boring and I'm already tired of it and it's been 5 weeks. You want to do this crap forever? Sounds sad to me lol

Open offices and mass cafeterias are so prone to spreading all kinds of diseases. Commute wastes ton of productivity (time, cost of operating a vehicle) Traffic congestion has a huge social cost (e.g., time, money spent on maintaining infra) Companies spending billions on real estate and so called perks (shuttles) often leading to stock price decline. It’s about time to change this and free food is not worth 2 hours of commute or hellish housing price.

If you think company saving money on real estate will wind up in your pockets, you're bugging. They will offer half the price in stock to you if that's the case. Also, it's about going to work and working with your buddies. Human interaction. Are you worried about spreading disease? Really? Just ban all traffic coming into the country from evil communist dictatorships like China and you'll be good 😂👍

Well if we get cubicles and good enough hygiene in the office. Sure. In the current ‘open office’ BS, one person with a flu means the entire building of flu. It’s worse at FB where it’s entirely open.
