Do you think Apple hiring managers are fair to black women or Latinas in hiring?

Apple SWE isn’t the strongest anyways but have heard it’s more bro-y and toxic than the others. I guess if the software were good it’s one thing but there are complaints about mediocre and competitive management that negatively impacts everyone. There’s a lot of Apple PMs who have Harvard or MIT on their LinkedIn when really they took an online one week course. Apple is not a meritocracy. I mentioned it on the last post. Several people who were laid off were hired within a time span of a week meanwhile, others couldn’t get a call back. Those people weren’t more qualified or anything. I’m tired of Blinders acting like it’s because the people in Apple are super talented when Apple was T2 before the layoffs. Apple hires on nepotism and plenty of Blinders mentioned this before how people that they fired at Facebook and Google magically ended up at Apple. It’s nepotism. There are some people in prototyping roles that didn’t even have to take the leet code portion because they already knew the hiring Manager.

If you are objectively good, it doesn't matter what your characteristics are. You will get through.

Everything is not about race! No one cares what’s the race of a person. All that matters is if the person does his/her job well

Unity iGiH05 OP Apr 6, 2023

Yes but why assume hiring managers can’t be biased to even interview candidates?

Unity iGiH05 OP Apr 6, 2023

If that’s the case, What explains the people that have coding roles inside Apples AR/VR department that can’t code? And didn’t have to be tested?

Speaking of nepotism, just look at the list of new VPs at Google. Or interview with Amazon and see if all members of the team is from the same country. Apple is much less about nepotism. I see significantly more folks from the likes of Stanford and Ivy League at Apple. I think that’s a sign it is indeed popular amongst Americans. Go to Amazon, Qualcomm, Intel or Microsoft. You will hardly find any American engineers there. Most are overseas transfers or someone with a master degree from a state college in US. I am an immigrant but enjoy Apple is much more balanced amongst tech and it is not even close. And yes I see many many African or Latin decent here at Apple. They studied at MIT and the likes but there are others who studied in South America as well. I hardly found anyone when I was at Microsoft. So you chose a wrong company to talk about this subject.

Unity iGiH05 OP Apr 6, 2023

Not in the AR/VR division. Talk to your team about it. Most in AR/VR are there on nepotism. UX prototypers and engineers who didn’t have code in interviews because they knew each other from being in AR/VR online groups. Most of the AR/VR people also aren’t from Stanford or Ivy Leagues

I am happy your division in Apple is good though. Really. It’s nice to hear. ☺️

The thing with hiring is it's multi-stage. Application Interview Offer. Which stages do you think are unfair? Do you think they aren't getting through the application stage? Apple would likely have goals to "hire {minority} people at the rate they apply" - this means if 4% of candidates are black women, 4% of hires should be black women Do you think the interviews are unfair? Well the interviews get somewhat randomly shuffled between the current employees. So are they all systematically biased? Offer phase, do you think offers are not being sent out as fairly? Fewer offers, or lower compensation? Or are you just trying to stir up a fight and haven't really thought too much about it? Perhaps you had a friend who was rejected and you're assuming there is some systematic cause rather than a) bad luck, or b) poor fit

I don’t see how someone who’s been doing AR/VR eng for 9 years can’t get hired or an interview. But the young men who were laid off from MRTK at Microsoft got hired in 2-3 weeks in February.

Apple vbwV47 Apr 7, 2023

Tf is this supposed to be evidence. Some person you know didn’t get an interview and you know another one who got hired and now you think apple is racist. There’s plenty of factors that go into hiring. Some are out of the candidates control like the position has too many applicants, or maybe apple decided to not hire as much for AR/VR. Apple is very frugal on hiring and if they start to see no need for a role they’ll stop interviewing quickly. Don’t need to jump to the race card immediately

Companies have hiring quota, it’s not that unexpected

Unity iGiH05 OP Apr 6, 2023

But if someone was in the pipeline for longer why did 2 juniors get hired in 2-3 weeks

Google lawski Apr 6, 2023

Same answer, diversity quota

Why do u want to work at apple so badly? If you really think they are so discriminating, why would you want to join a company who you assume is biased? There are thousands of companies out there. Seems like you have some other issues. Might you be overqualified for the roles? During a couple of our open roles we had a 10+ year experience person or director level person submit for an associate role. We went with the candidate that did not have as much experience but met the 2-3 year requirement that we had and likely would not feel underpaid for the role we placed them in. The concern for management on more over experienced would be employee happiness. Likely they would very soon 1) ask for raise, 2) ask for promotion, 3) ask for more challenging work 4) look for a new job that pays them similar to their old director level jobs. All these are issues that management may not be able to fix or accommodate in a short amount of time and pending what needs are with the job, rest of team etc. All are considerations that could lead to not interviewing a over qualified candidate.
