I was reading an article today that it claimed that the Chinese owned viral-video platform aka TikTok reached one billion monthly active users faster than either facebook or instagram and is on track to triple its revenue this year. Do you think instagram has any chance to come back and destroy TikTok with its reels or is it the game over era for Zucky Zuck? I’m an MLE recently got an offer from Meta so i will be helping their algo to win this game Tc 450
Will win? TikTok has already won. The minute Adam Mosseri decided to pivot IG’s entire strategy to cloning TikTok the game was over. IG had a great niche and was a category-defining social media app. Abandoning all that to play catch-up in short-form videos instead of spinning off Reels into its own thing will be taught as a cautionary tale in MBA classes for years to come.
That was the same for copying snapchat
For Snapchat it was just a feature (stories) that IG stole. It didn’t reorient the app around disappearing media. IG’s new features are all about transforming the app into a short form video platform.
I think Taiwan is going to get invaded in the next couple years and it’s hard to see Tiktok not getting caught in the crossfire
Why ? People have been saying that for the last 50 years. What change so significantly in the last years compare to prior years. And why would a money hungry national that's primarily survive in export would gain from invading Taiwan? People keep mentioning tsmc. But tsmc is buying the machine from asml. What's stopping china just buy the machine themselves and learn how to operate it from ex employee versus invading Taiwan, endure international pressure, do post war re construction and maybe have a pay off in investment in 50 years. Seems to be invasion offer no economic benefits.
They'll spin it off and IPO it first. They're already building out the parallel orgs outside of China to have a smooth divestiture.
These meta folks are desperate 😂
What is it like to be poor
@newZuck, please tell us
In what way can/will it destroy meta? There will be enough cash for the next decade at least to keep funding the metaverse effort, and at that point who cares about traditional IG/FB. Plus, tiktok getting the stoplight will bring all the same issues that meta has. From content moderation, to influencing elections, etc. good luck with that. Oh, and if trump is president again, I bet the convo about selling tiktok will resurface again. Let’s see what happens after that
Metaverse will fail after burning $100B. It’s a desperate Hail Mary, but it will be the final nail in the coffin. FB and IG are in slow decline. It won’t necessarily die. But best days are behind us. If we are lucky, you and I may not care since we will be out of here while that happens.
We’ll see. I for one believe in the metaverse success (though not meta’s leading it necessarily), but as you said, I don’t mind working for google or apple once they invest in that space more
One product’s rise does not necessarily mean another’s downfall. I think all the current big tech giants are here to stay and control their own innovation destiny. 5 years from now Meta (or even TikTok)‘a defining offering could very well be different than what it is today and still do great so at least myself no I don’t think it’s game over for anyone.
Agreed. I’m more interested in the bytedance vs meta competition in the VR space. Tiktok, Reels, Shorts and all that are a fad. But the metaverse vision is certainly a bigger battle
Short form vertical content made specifically for vertical phones that everyone has? Unless we suddenly shift to landscape orientation for our mobile devices, I don’t see why short form vertical content is a “fad.” There’s no going back lol
Do you really ever foresee gen z moving from TikTok to insta? The answer is no, they wouldn't. TikTok is what they know, and insta is becoming old-people social media.
i’m old and out of touch. are kids these days really saying IG is for old people!? i can see them saying that about facebook but wow, IG too?
Instagram is for old people. Finsta maybe some youth but they are all on breal and snap and mostly TikTok now
Yahoo is still here.
😂
Different times compared to when FB was launched.
Tiktok has won
I doubt it
I am curious when politics is going to step in on TikTok. That's their biggest risk, getting shut down.
Since trump gone, I don’t see other presidents doing that
Not without reason, but if China attacks Taiwan then things will be different.
