I hate tipping but I feel pressured to do so. Recently I tipped just a dollar for a $25 meal at a Thai restaurant and the waiter ran towards me as I walked out demanding a higher tip. He said "if you don't wanna tip, order to go". I was disappointed. I told him he cannot demand a tip, and just walked out taking my $1 back. Can we end this tipping culture?
Different countries have different customs. In the United States, we tip our servers. As he rightly pointed to you, you're free to order to go.
If you want to end tipping culture , pick the fight with the right people. For example -you could talk to restaurant owners. But that takes a little more than just being an entitled jerk. So choose
You're only in a better position of not having to be tipped because of the lack of engineers in our field. If companies could pay us minimum wage and get away with it, they would. Just something to think about. I don't think he should have asked you to tip better, but also recognise he's probably making nothing in an area that costs a shit ton (if you're in the bay at least). But yes. tipping culture sucks. Companies have no moral values in this country.
OP would I be correct in assuming you aren't from the U.S. originally? Giving a $1 tip is insulting on a $25 meal. Would have been better not to tip if you don't have the means or service was bad.
Wtf is wrong with you OP? It's not about the fucking culture. Tip your server you insensitive spoiled ingrate.
I haven't worked in a restaurant but have heard that servers and wait staff rely on tips .... sometimes less than minimum wage ($3/hr) + tips to make it
Not in CA.
Menu prices are set and restaurant staff are paid on the assumption that they will be tipped the prevailing rate of 15%. This is the established transaction pattern in this country. You may be excused some initial confusion if you are a recent immigrant, but you really must have been living in a bubble if you have been living here a while and have not internalized this understanding.
Dude you're an asshole. Waiters make about $4 an hour (base hourly). I was a waiter for many years. Just an FYI, when you don't tip them, youre basically taking money from feeding themselves and their children. You honestly should be ashamed. what do you make? Over 200k + and you tipped this poor guy a dollar???? garbage.
In Seattle waiters make minimum wage ($15/hour) + tips. And now restaurants print 25% recommended tips on top of that. You think that's normal?
That's an exception. 99% of the rest of the country isnt operating like that. flawed stupid moronic logic on your end
Are you serious? What kind of entitled jerk are you? You work at Facebook... do you work as a Janitor that you earn so little you'd stiff a minimum wage earning server? You're everything people hate about Silicon Valley.
and when did servers become an entitled bunch of jerks to deserve tips in a mandatory fashion? the very meaning of tip is to add on top of a service.
When their ability to feed themselves and pay their rent became dependent on it.
