Does Google remind you of Microsoft in the Ballmer era?

It's crazy how Google was once regarded as the innovative Tech giant that created fantastic products (Maps, Gmail, Youtube, Search, Chrome) and as one of the most highly regarded companies to work for. Looking backwards, since Sundar took over in 2015, what new succesful products has google launched? It's loosing market share in Ads, loosing the Cloud race vs Azure/AWS, behind in AI, TikTok and Reels as a thread to YT, etc. Do you also have the perception that Google's appeal in terms of employment is past it's prime? Especially after the continued recent layoffs. For context, when Sundar became CEO Google market cap was +30% above Microsoft, whilst Microsoft is now close to double of Google's market cap. Google was +40% above Amazon, now they are aligned. It was 2x the size of Meta, now only +40%. It was 20x the size of Nvidia, now it's on par. It seems as Google is too big to fail, but the effects in revenue might be seen in 5-10 years and it is already loosing market share in Ads. What would you say are the hottest places to work today? OpenAI and Nvidia come to mind #tech #google

Would be interesting to know which companies are the top desirable places to work at, specially in Engineering.

+1 I would say definitely Open AI being one of them. What I don't understand is how Microsoft is not better regarded

Seattle sucks (and they really push you to move there…) and Microsoft pay/perks have never been 1st tier. Maybe with the stock run TC is better, but on initial offer they are good not great.

Certainly seems like it has peaked and is potentially on a slow decline. I honestly think the beginning of the end was then getting rid of the work 4 days, innovate 1 day concept. That was brilliant, instead they seemed to invest in a lot of moonshot ideas they were a little too moonshot- IE: just academics doing research like a university vs building things you could take to market. I would say for Sundar not building or investing in OpenAI he should be fired. While Bard is a nice thought just seems like a copycat…

That's a very interesting take. This was about 1-2 years ago?

NewRelic DarthWilly Feb 15

It was a lot further back than that. I also feel like early on they were small enough that those ideas could actually happen. As they become more of a rest/vest company that turned into another way to waste time. More big tech needs to let senior talent just do what they want some of the time…

Google DID NOT create YouTube. Google BOUGHT YouTube.

Microsoft whoever2 Feb 15

I mean very obvious. Low quality ceo hiring low quality friends and low quality friends hiring even lower quality friends. Yet their titles and pay are all high. It’s a place to steal money and then they go and spread their diseases at another company.
