I live 90 miles from Atlanta, talking to recruiter about remote role, trying to make the case that I should be considered Atlanta (more comp!). Lots of companies use that rule, just wondering if Google does the same or if this is going to create issues for me.
100 mile is the rule? I had a tech recruiter that didn’t know anything and tried to give me a different comp 20 miles away
It's a rule in some places. Capital One has used it in the past, and a recruiter at Dropbox I spoke to mentioned it as well. I'm a bit deep in the process but it never came up so I'm hoping it doesn't end up a big deal.
Also 20 miles is absurd
I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think there is anything like this. Your corp laptop is tracked and they know your location. There’s a US comp map that has all the city to pay band mappings. In certain states you’ll get a pay decrease if you’re in the next city over from the state’s big city
Interesting, and I suppose it makes sense. At no point during the process have they ever asked for my address
It's by county, there's a list of counties internally when a metro differs from the rest of the state. So, if that 90 miles is just over a county line into a rural county, you're probably screwed, but if you're at the outer edge of a county that's more suburban, you might be good.
If the role is remote, just keep it to state and max say closest big city. No need to go deep into zip code and stuff. Let it come to offer stage
To follow up, I've accepted an offer and they've not asked for anything at any point except closest google office (which is Atlanta, but I did say remote). Literally the first time I've had to input my address is for the background check. Is this going to cause issues? I want to be happy but I'm scared this is going to screw me
Actually nevermind, it looks like I entered it early on in the employment application NDA doc. Ok, phew! So that means they've had the info and are cool with it. Man, that's a telief
