I want to work outside of US although my contract is remote-US. I plan to use a VPN connected to my home router to look like I’m connecting from there. They could check some hardware stuff and find out I’m abroad. Do they actually do this type of checks? I wouldn’t want to be caught and fired for breach of contract. #remote #vpn #oracle
If they suspect a lot of people from your team / department are working outside the country then they will be checking. Where I used to work, a lot of people from my team went to work remote outside of Europe and at some point they were told either to return immediately or take a "vacation" till they return or they can leave.
They may or may not actively check but for sure receive alerts. Whether those alerts are looked at by someone and put up the chain may depend on the company.
Will u get fired for breaching contract if they check and find out
Started new poll for this question Check out this post! "Can you get fired for working abroad? (Tech Industry)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/jrLdqqJM
What a dumb question. Of course you can. You’re ensuring your company is liable for taxes they aren’t legally setup to pay, and that they aren’t paying while employing you.
"I want" and "I wouldn't want to be caught" are not mutually exclusive. If you don't want to get caught, don't do the stupid thing you're thinking of doing, simple as.
No one can tell you the likelyhood of repercussions OP, since it depends on your company and your situation. You are breaching your contract, and IT generally does have tooling to see if you are outside country. There are other scenarios as well, like asking to travel on any quickly organized working session, etc. Depending on their discretion, they may ask you to come back immediately, take vacation, or you can be terminated on spot without severence. You are also breaking local laws by not paying taxes and exposing your company to legal trouble by not registering as your employer in your country. PS: Actions such as this also imparts a bad name to remote work. There is automatically a higher bar for ethics for the remote workers, and some wilfully take advantage of the situation.
You forgot they might end up in jail for not using their taxes...
Depends. Any legit IT and Security team has the means to know where their assets are. Whether they are actively keeping tabs or not is another thing. I wouldn’t use any method to try to hide where you are because it could be discovered and then you would look guilty. Also, companies have compliance issues if you are abroad indefinitely. Generally speaking- a company might have a policy where you can work abroad for up to 60 or 90 days or something. After that it becomes an HR issue
Share what hardware/software you’re using please!!!!!
The bigger issue is, do you have a work permit to work in the country that you're travelling to? That will also be the country where your tax is liable.
If you perform you’re fine. If not, they have their excuse to cut you
Fine but might end up in jail for tax evasion... So not so fine maybe?
Na bro, pay U.S. tax or renounce citizenship no matter where you live
🤣 so you think client IT won’t track you?
