Does bad freemium experience make you want to pay?

I just posted another post about how bad freemium experience makes me uninstall apps, wanted to take a poll. I pay for Apple Music and no ads hulu, but when I saw the ad version of Hulu with the insanely loud ads, it made me really hate it. Same with Spotify, i tried using it and they don’t let you go back or start a song over, only 6 skips, annoying ads. So i just uninstalled spotify. But I’m curious if other people do similar things or the exact opposite where you pay/pay more for the annoying stuff to be removed. Tc 300k

Only pay if you think it’s providing some major convenience. If not, and you can live without it, then why pay

Yeah, I mean I don’t have that many subscriptions, so I’m okay with paying for things like music, because i use it all day, the issue is these odd tactics companies come up with

I would much prefer to pay $12/month (or whatever it is) than get any interruptions from ads. Or annoyance from limitations. And all the freemium products in this space have adds I believe, so makes sense to pay (and I’m much beyond getting free music from BitTorrent, or whatever the kids do these days)

I have no issue with ads, the Spotify ads were intentionally annoying though. Or the hulu ads are obscenely loud. That’s an additional step beyond inconvenient

Ads are an economic bad: https://hbr.org/2020/01/advertising-makes-us-unhappy Avoiding them as an individual and restricting them at the organisational level is a top priority.

How can we avoid them without just subscribing to a million things?

Spreading the gospel of adblocking, and being strategic with subscriptions.

I was good with ads on Spotify until they stopped me to select the song! Had to pay for premium 😂

See thats another dumb restriction… like what is this? If Apple Music wasn’t a thing, I’d just use radio. I have no issues with ads, but the spotify ads are overboard and i looked it up. They’re intentionally annoying, because they think it’ll drive users to pay

I understand why people use freemium services like Spotify/Pluto/Freevee/etc - you're agreeing to watch ads in exchange for free content, that makes sense. But when the choice is between paying for an ad supported plan or an ad-free plan, like with Hulu/Netflix/Max/etc, why do people choose to pay for ad-supported plans? That makes no sense. You're paying the service money AND watching their ads, which means the more content you watch the more money the company makes off you. Ultimately they make more money off you that way than if you had just paid for the ad-free plan. That's just dumb.

This is exactly how it doesn’t work!

Annoying people so they pay is a bad strategy unless you’re selling oxygen and you’re the only one in town selling it. If your product sucks the competition will be more than happy to offer a better alternative to your annoyed customers.
