Does becoming an interviewer help you with interviews in the future?

Not saying I want to leave Amazon but like many of us here, I'm not inherently tied to one company forever. And I'm interested in becoming an interviewer for many reasons, but I'm curious, has anyone found it useful for their own personal careers? Like once you become an interviewer, you know what others are looking for in an interview? Software Engineer interviews, to be specific

Of course, but not for the reasons you think; you usually ask the same question to everyone because you have a sense of where people fall on the curve so it won’t tell you how to solve questions or obscure tricks or anything. However, judging the interview will show you common mistakes and most importantly you’ll realize how much likability matters (even if it shouldn’t.)

Why shouldn’t it matter?

Amazon bCxp50 Aug 12, 2019

Likability is incredibly important.

Definitely yes. I also found I’m much less nervous in interviews now.

Yes it does

Yes. Personal experience.

There's an industry-recognized secret handshake that they teach you when you join the ranks of an interviewer. When you bust that out in an interview, you get a free pass.

Amazon ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ Aug 12, 2019

Yes absolutely. Not so much on the technical front, but you’ll notice all the mistakes candidates make in how they approach the interview, and you’ll know to avoid them, and how to phrase answers and ask clarifying questions in a way that will make things easy for the interviewer.

It depends. Some folks learn from others mistakes and some folks fail if we put them in others shoes.

Cisco G-Intern Aug 12, 2019

It definitely helps for Amazon, but not necessarily for others. Amazon focuses a lot on leadership principles, which is very proprietary. Coding is fairly easy - you don’t need to be an interviewer to get insights.

The LPs are specific to Amazon but more generally they're cultural fit questions evaluated with standard behavioral interviewing techniques. Your skill here should directly help you when interviewing at other companies

Learning how to interview teaches you how shitty a lot of other interviewers are.

Ripple UoNS08 Aug 12, 2019

Yes, interviewing people helps a lot to become a better interviewee. You see the errors that people make and it helps to reflect upon yourself. You get better at understanding of what people are trying to say and how to give just a little push to the right direction to help someone you're interviewing to move forward. Also it gives your ego huge boost and helps you to get rid of the imposter syndrome. You realize that you may be not that good but the other are even worse! 8/10, would recommend this activity.
