Currently at Amazon and i was thinking of switching to msft. But im surprised to see msft pay bands on levels.fyi. There principal make as much as our top sde 2 engineers. Isnt msft a big tech in the same league as the faang/mag7? Tc 300k

Microsoft doesn’t pay big bucks unless you’re higher up
Need to be higher than principal lol
67+
Yes. Got l63 recently and the entire offer including bonus was less than the base salary of my competing offer
Where was your competing offer?
240k base, 150k stock per year and then 10% bonus and a 35k signing bonus
> Isnt msft a big tech in the same league as the faang/mag7 sweet summer child
It's in top 7 as they pay extremely low to the market rate and keep operating costs down
Yea that shit made me laugh
Msft pays 60% of market's highest offer, they focus less on innovation and more on acquisition. They hire people mostly to make sure that their legacy products and services are maintained in on call.
> they focus less on innovation and more on acquisition That's actually a really good point that i never thought about.
It’s 67th percentile to be exact, and interestingly it’s been 67th since the 80s, which is surprising to me because I remember at one point Microsoft was “the” tech company to work for. CMU grads would drop out to work for them Ref: http://minimsft.blogspot.com/2006/11/limited-round-up-new-souls-and-old.html?m=1 There’s also some business books that have talked about it too.
They pay less but I heard it’s a really nice place to work as far as WLB goes. They also allow fully remote. They might pay less than their competitors, but they still pay a lot compared to most companies that hire SWEs in the US
This. Once you're in, its pretty hard to get fired and the engineering bar is kinda low so its real easy to coast. I'm actually going back since they still offer fully remote
Yup that’s my target company, msft is my best shot at HCOL-like TC working remotely for one of the big name companies bc I refuse to move to a tech hub
No, please, don't come here. You guys already destroyed google, not microsoft
Huh? Microsoft has been a sea of mediocrity for a couple of decades already. Not much left to destroy.
We are finding people like them and laying them off
Check out this post! "This is how low Microsoft pays (Tech Industry)" https://www.teamblind.com/us/s/uqDckNyR
you will make less and be told you get paid to much then laid off
