I’m pursuing my MS this fall. I was accepted to two programs - Johns Hopkins, MS Engineering Management ($30k per year after scholarship) University of Maryland, MS Systems Engineering (fully funded) Do you think the name of the program (“management”) and/or the Hopkins name will carry much weight in my future? I.e., should I just pay for the MS?
absolutely, 100%
Maryland is very good school. Congratulations.
Thank you! Does this mean you think I should forgo the Hopkins school/program name to attend UMD?
The two programs look different to me. System engineering vs engineering Management. What do you like more?? In terms of school and it's reputation I would say Maryland is good brand to carry. So yes, I would prefer it since it's fully funded. But again, what is your passion is more important here.
Wherever u get more time for LC.
I don’t understand. What do you mean?

60k $ for a two year course that gives you 'Hopkins' brand is totally worth it. Don't compare current job market with how things are during recession. You are probably in your 20s and will definitely live through at least one recession in your corporate life. When there are hundred jobs and 80 applicants, name doesn't matter. But when there are 500 applicants and 50 jobs, name definitely matters.
What if recession happens not right out of colg but 10 years after. Will it still matter?
it does
JHU matters much less in an MS. As someone who hires managers - go Maryland
Brand name matters in the long term. Take JHU
I went to Maryland! No one on the west coast has heard of it. Save the money and go there.
Go to Maryland because it's free. Believe me when I say this.
As long as you have a degree, you’ll get through the automated system, so no debt is the way to go.
